Chapter 8 - Entering the Sterling Estate

The transition from the tin shack to the Sterling Estate felt like stepping into another dimension.
When the sleek black limousine drove through the massive wrought-iron gates of the estate, Emily and Grace pressed their faces against the tinted glass, gasping in awe at the endless green lawns, marble fountains, and the sprawling, castle-like mansion that sat at the center of the property.
Inside the grand foyer, a crowd of household staff stood in neat rows, waiting to welcome them. At the center stood Elena Sterling, Jonathan’s wife. For three years, Elena had lived in a haze of clinical depression and silent heartbreak, her eyes perpetually fixed on empty picture frames. But when the heavy oak doors opened and Jonathan walked in carrying little Leo—followed closely by a hesitant Monica and the wide-eyed twins—Elena’s breath hitched.
She didn't need DNA tests or explanations. She saw the familiar curve of Leo's smile, the depth of his dark eyes, and the way he looked around with quiet curiosity.
"Leo..." Elena whispered, her voice trembling as tears flooded her eyes. She rushed forward, falling to her knees as Jonathan gently lowered the boy into her outstretched arms.
For the first time in three years, the Sterling mansion echoed with genuine, joyous laughter and weeping tears of relief. Elena held her son as if she would never let him go, burying her face in his neck while Leo gently patted her cheek with his small hand, just as he used to do with Monica when she was tired.
Elena then looked up, her tear-stained face turning toward Monica, Emily, and Grace, who stood awkwardly near the entrance, feeling entirely out of place in their worn-out clothes.
Without a word of hesitation, Elena stood up, walked over to Monica, and took both of her calloused, work-roughened hands in her own.

"Thank you," Elena sobbed softly, pressing her forehead against Monica's hands. "You kept my baby safe. You gave him life when the world tried to take him away from us. From this moment on, you are my sister, and your daughters are my daughters."
Monica felt a warm tear slip down her own cheek. All the years of struggle, hunger, and fear melted away in that single embrace. They were no longer alone in the dark.
