Chapter 7 - The Strike of the Scales

Miguel looked down at the remote in my hand, his eyes wide with shock and profound admiration.
"You found the envelope," he breathed, a mixture of disbelief and immense relief washing over his bruised face.
"Of course I did," I said, pulling his bruised face to mine and kissing him fiercely amidst the wailing sirens. "Now tell me how to finish this."
Outside the thick vault glass, Marcus Cole realized he had been outmaneuvered. He raised his suppressed pistol and fired three rounds into the glass, but the multi-layered ballistic material barely scratched. Infuriated, he signaled his men to plant thermite charges against the vault door hinges.
"We have about three minutes before they breach the steel," Miguel said, grabbing my hand and dragging me toward the back of the vault structure where the bank’s primary data routing node was housed.
He took the flash drive from my coat, inserted it directly into the master routing terminal, and pressed the red button on the remote detonator.
The terminal screen instantly lit up with bright green lines of code. A progress bar appeared on the display:
UPLOADING ENCRYPTED EVIDENCE TO DOJ DIRECTORY... TRANSMITTING TO FEDERAL PROSECUTORS... BROADCASTING MEDIA DOSSIER... 45% ... 70% ... 100%
UPLOAD COMPLETE. DISCLOSURE INITIATED.
Across the country, on thousands of news terminals, government servers, and federal agency monitors, the complete evidence file of the Apex Group's illegal operations, corporate bribery, and political corruption went live simultaneously.
Outside the vault, Cole’s phone began ringing incessantly. He pulled it out, looked at the screen, and his face turned ash-white. His superiors were burning down the network. His offshore accounts were being frozen in real time by the Treasury Department.
Sparks showered from the vault door as the thermite charges began to burn through the outer locks.
"They're coming through!" I shouted, retreating behind a heavy metal desk as smoke filled the vault corridor.
"Stay behind me, Ana," Miguel said, standing firm in front of me, holding a metal bar he had pried from the deposit racks.
The heavy steel vault door was kicked open with a thunderous crash. Marcus Cole stepped through the smoke, his face twisted in psychotic rage, gun raised directly at Miguel's chest.
"You ruined everything, Thorne!" Cole roared. "You and your pathetic little wife!"
"Drop your weapons! Federal Agents! Don't move!"
A deafening chorus of shouts echoed from the bank lobby above. Tactical boots thundered down the marble staircase. Dozens of heavily armed FBI SWAT operators burst into the vault hallway, lasers painting Cole and his mercenaries in bright red dots.
"Drop the gun! Down on the ground now!"
Cole froze, looking from the red dots on his chest to the fully armed SWAT team surrounding him. Slowly, bitterly, he dropped his weapon to the floor and raised his hands.
Within seconds, the mercenaries were pinned to the ground and handcuffed.
A tall man in a dark trench coat walked through the SWAT team—Director Vance, Miguel’s loyal former handler. He looked at Miguel, then at me, and let out a long, exhausted sigh of relief.
"Operation Clean Sweep is complete," Director Vance said clearly. "David Thorne... or should I say, Miguel Vance... your service is concluded. You're officially cleared."
Miguel dropped his metal bar. He turned to me, his shoulders slumping as years of unbearable weight and secret paranoia finally washed away from his body.
He fell to his knees in front of me, wrapping his arms around my waist, burying his face in my lap, and wept like a child.
May you like
I sat on the floor of the vault, wrapping my arms around him, holding him tight as the flashing blue lights of the federal agents illuminated the room.
The nightmare was finally over.
