Chapter 4 - The Specter of David Thorne

Fear chilled my blood into ice. I shoved the phone toward Elena, who gasped as she read the message.

"They followed you," Elena said, her eyes wide with panic. "They've been watching the house. Ana, we have to leave right now. Through the basement service exit."

We grabbed our bags and rushed down the emergency stairs, avoiding the main lobby elevators. Elena led me through a maze of concrete hallways until we reached the underground parking garage's delivery bay. We climbed into her unmarked SUV, and she tore out into the blazing Phoenix sunshine, constantly checking her rearview mirror.

"Where are we going?" I asked, clutching the duffel bag against my chest.

"A safe house my firm uses for witness protection," Elena replied, her hands tight on the steering wheel. "Nobody knows about it, not even Miguel."

As we sped down the I-10 freeway toward the outer desert, my mind raced back through eight years of marriage. Every late-night phone call he took on the porch, every time he locked his home office door, every long journey where he returned looking bruised, exhausted, and emotionally drained. I remembered how he would hold me so tightly when he got home, as if he was afraid I would vanish into thin air.

He wasn't distant because he didn't love me. He was terrified for me.

"Who sent that message, Elena?" I asked. "Who are these people?"

"A cartel-backed mercenary network called the Apex Group," Elena explained grimly. "They operate under the guise of private security. Miguel was assigned to infiltrate them to expose their money laundering operations inside US tech corporations. But someone inside the federal agency leaked his identity. They framed him for stealing fifty million dollars of Apex funds."

"Did he take it?"

"I don't know," Elena admitted. "If he did, he did it to buy his freedom—or to buy protection for you. That money in your mattress... that was his escape fund. But the ledger—the encrypted flash drive you found—that's what they really want. It contains the real names of the corrupt officials inside the government who betrayed his unit."

We arrived at a small, unassuming stucco house tucked away in a quiet residential development near the Superstition Mountains. Elena parked inside the closed garage and brought me inside.

The house was clean, minimalist, and equipped with blackout curtains and secure communications. Elena immediately pulled out a burner phone, dialed a long international code, and put it on speaker.

After three rings, a deep voice answered. "Speak."

"It's Elena," she said clearly. "I have Ana. She found the vault inside the mattress. Apex is tracking her. They just sent a threat to her phone."

Silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds. Then came a harsh, ragged gasp of breath.

"Ana?" Miguel’s voice filled the room, stripped of all calm facade, raw with pure panic and desperation. "Ana! Are you hurt? Are you okay?"

Hearing his voice made tears stream down my face, but my voice remained steady. "I'm unhurt, Miguel. Or David. Or whoever you really are."

"Ana... oh God, Ana, I am so sorry," he wept, the composure of the smooth sales manager completely shattered. "I tried so hard to keep you away from this filth. I was going to finish this week, secure your immunity papers, and disappear forever so you'd be safe..."

"You lied to me for eight years!" I yelled into the phone, tears overflowing. "You brought this danger to our home! You let me sleep on top of a secret vault of death and corruption every single night!"

"I put it there because it was the only place I could guard with my life every night while I was home!" he cried back. "Ana, listen to me carefully. I never lied about loving you. Every second I spent with you was the only real part of my life. But if Apex has located you, the clock has run out. You have the drive with the brass key, don't you?"

May you like

"Yes," I said, looking down at the heavy brass key in my hand.

"That key opens a safety deposit box at the First National Bank in downtown Los Angeles," Miguel said urgently. "Inside is the hard copy of the evidence against Apex and my official pardon granted by the Inspector General. But I can't reach LA in time—Apex has trapped me in Dallas. Ana, you are the only one who can clear my name and stop them."
