Chapter 5 - The Turn of the Tide

The firefight was brutal, deafening, and mercifully short. Lorenzo’s tactical positioning behind the reinforced furniture gave him a vital cover advantage, and his decades of surviving the city's underworld wars made him a lethal combatant in close quarters.
As the smoke began to clear, three intruders lay motionless near the shattered doorway, while the remaining mercenaries fell back into the hallway, dragging their wounded behind them.
“Boss! Status!” Marcus’s voice crackled over the secure comm-link from the eastern wing.
“We’re holding the nursery,” Lorenzo panted, his breathing heavy as he quickly ejected an empty magazine and slapped a fresh one into his weapon. “The vanguard unit is hit, but they’ll try to regroup for a secondary push using tear gas or flashbangs. We need to move now.”
Lorenzo kicked open the hydraulic panic hatch beneath the window seat, motioning urgently to me. “Maya! Now!”
I scooped Nico securely into my arms, clutching the medical bag with my free hand, and scrambled down the steel ladder into the subterranean shelter. Lorenzo followed swiftly behind, pulling heavy lever handles that sealed the vault door with an airtight hiss just as a concussive flashbang detonated in the nursery above us.
The storm shelter was surprisingly spacious, illuminated by emergency battery strips along the polished concrete walls. It was equipped with air filtration systems, independent communication relays, and a direct line to an underground vehicular exit half a mile away in the estate’s private carriage house.
“Are you hurt?” I asked anxiously, setting Nico down in a cushioned travel cot and turning to Lorenzo. He had a shallow graze along his shoulder where a round had clipped his jacket, soaking the dark fabric with blood.
“It’s nothing,” Lorenzo waved off my concern, pulling a tactical satellite phone from the wall console. “The question is whether our backup received the encrypted dead-man switch transmission I triggered when the front gates fell.”
Within seconds, the secure console hummed to life. A deep, gruff voice spoke through the speaker: “Bolaro Command. This is Vanguard Interception Unit Alpha. We received the distress beacon. The estate perimeter is currently being secured by federal task force assets under our direct operational mandate.”
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed. “Federal task force? Whose jurisdiction?”
“Mine,” a crisp, authoritative voice interrupted over the frequency. “Special Agent Vance, FBI Organized Crime Task Force.”
Lorenzo stiffened. “Vance? As in Clara Vance?”
“My estranged sister,” the federal agent replied coldly. “And she’s currently in custody cooperating with our investigation into the Sterling syndicate's financial laundering network. We’re moving onto the property now. Stand down, Lorenzo. Your son is safe.”

I let out a long, shuddering breath, sliding down the concrete wall until I hit the floor. The adrenaline was finally wearing off, leaving a hollow ache in my bones. I looked over at Nico, who had miraculously slept through the entire subterranean retreat, breathing softly in his cot.
Lorenzo holstered his weapon, walking over to stand beside the cot. He looked down at his son, then turned his gaze toward me, the hardened crime lord completely eclipsed by a profoundly grateful father.
