Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marble

Her name was Clara Vance. For seven years, she had been Elena Bolaro’s closest confidante, a woman trusted with the deepest secrets of the Bolaro household. When Elena passed away, Clara had supposedly stepped into the role of surrogate aunt and chief domestic supervisor, managing the nursery staff with quiet efficiency.
Now, standing in the doorway of the nursery with broken glass at her feet, Clara’s polished composure fractured.
“Clara,” Lorenzo’s voice was dangerously quiet, stripped of all warmth. It was the voice that made rival syndicate leaders disappear in the dead of winter. “Explain the bottle.”
Clara swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward Dr. Crane. The physician offered a subtle, imperceptible shake of his head—a warning, or perhaps a reminder of a pact sealed in darker rooms.
“Mr. Bolaro—Lorenzo, please,” Clara’s voice trembled, perfectly calibrated to evoke sympathy. “The new nurse, she’s lying. She’s trying to frame me. I prepared that formula with my own hands, following strict pediatric guidelines.”
“You prepared it using a bottle with a double-walled compartment?” I asked, stepping forward, holding the disassembled cap up to the light so the white residue remained visible. “A custom dual-chamber seal designed to keep dry chemical agents separate from the liquid until the nipple is inverted. Standard baby bottles don’t have screw-off compartments in the threading, Clara. Especially ones coated in pharmaceutical-grade potassium chloride or whatever slows an infant's heart rate down precisely at midnight.”
Dr. Crane stepped in, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses, attempting to regain professional authority. “Mr. Bolaro, this woman is a junior nurse with zero credentials in forensic toxicology. She is hysteric. The residue is likely dried formula crust or residual calcium precipitate from sterilization.”
“Then let’s test it,” I countered immediately. “There's a full medical lab downstairs that you set up for Nico’s daily blood panels. Run the swab right now.”
Lorenzo’s gaze shifted between us. His eyes, dark and piercing, locked onto Clara. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.
“Marcus,” Lorenzo called out.
The head of security stepped through the doorway, his massive frame blocking the exit. “Boss?”
“Take Dr. Crane and Clara to the lower study. Confiscate all personal phones, tablets, and keys. Nobody leaves this floor.” Lorenzo turned back to me, his expression unreadable. “Maya. You stay with Nico. If anyone enters this room who isn’t me, you lock the door and sound the silent alarm.”

The tension in the nursery was palpable, thick enough to choke on. As Marcus escorted Clara and Dr. Crane away, Clara cast one last look over her shoulder. It wasn't a look of fear anymore. It was a cold, calculating promise of retaliation.
I locked the nursery door behind them, my hands shaking only slightly as I turned back to the crib. Nico was sleeping peacefully now, his breathing steady for the first time since my shift began. I sat in the rocking chair beside him, realizing with sudden clarity that I had just stepped into the middle of a war zone disguised as a home. And the front line ran right through this crib.
