Chapter 7 - The Settlement Table

The final divorce mediation took place three months later in a neutral conference room downtown. The high-gloss glass table reflected the afternoon sunlight, casting bright patterns across the walls.
Malcolm looked a shell of his former self. His corporate suspension had turned into a permanent termination after his firm reviewed the final court findings. Eleanor had retreated to her estate, her social circle largely abandoning her after the public exposure of her family’s toxic dynamics. Brynn had deleted her social media accounts entirely.
Sarah Chen sat next to me, sliding the final settlement agreement across the polished table.
“The terms are absolute, Mr. Callahan,” Sarah stated calmly, pointing to the highlighted clauses. “Sole legal and physical custody remains with my client. You will retain supervised weekend visitation, monitored by a court-approved professional supervisor at your own expense, until Ruby turns eighteen or a family court evaluator recommends otherwise. Additionally, the marital home is signed over entirely to my client as part of the asset division and past medical expense reimbursement.”
Malcolm stared down at the papers. His hands trembled slightly as he picked up the Montblanc pen—a luxury gift his mother had given him years ago. He looked up across the table, his eyes meeting mine for the first time in months. There was no arrogance left in them. Only a hollow, bitter regret.
“I only wanted what was best for the family name, Claire,” he whispered, his voice cracking slightly.
“No, Malcolm,” I replied softly, gathering my portfolio. “You wanted what was easy. You cared more about an illusion of perfection than about the flesh and blood of our child. But you don't get to sacrifice Ruby on the altar of your mother’s pride anymore.”

Malcolm lowered his head, pressed the pen to the paper, and signed his name at the bottom of the document.
The Callahan dynasty of silence and cruelty had officially come to an end.
