Chapter 10 - The Sound of the Future

On a warm Saturday morning in late July, Ruby and I walked hand-in-hand down the paved path of the neighborhood botanical gardens.

Ruby stopped walking suddenly, tugging gently on my hand. She tilted her head upward, closing her eyes for a brief moment, a bright, radiant smile spreading across her face.
“Mommy, listen,” she whispered excitedly.
“What do you hear, sweetheart?” I asked, kneeling down to her eye level.
“I hear the wind in the trees,” she said, her eyes opening wide, sparkling with pure delight. “And I hear a bumblebee buzzing right over there by the roses.”
I pulled her into a warm, fierce embrace, resting my chin on her shoulder as the morning sun washed over us in golden waves.

“That’s the sound of the world, baby,” I whispered softly, kissing her cheek. “And you’re going to hear every single beautiful note of it for the rest of your life.”
We turned down the garden path together, walking side-by-side into a bright, boundless future where silence was never again used as a weapon, and every voice—most importantly her own—was finally, beautifully heard.
