Chapter 7 - The Surgeon’s Verdict

Lauren jumped to her feet instantly, racing across the small room until she was standing right in front of the surgeon.
"Dr. Vance! How is she? Is Ava... is my baby going to make it?"
Dr. Vance took a deep breath, offering a tired, reassuring smile that instantly lifted a massive, crushing weight off Lauren's chest.
"The surgery was successful, Mrs. Hale," Dr. Vance said, his voice warm and steady. "It was a long, complex procedure, and she had sustained significant internal trauma and inflammation. But our pediatric surgical team managed to repair the damage completely, clear the infection, and stabilize her vitals. She is currently resting in the pediatric intensive care unit under heavy sedation."
Lauren let out a broken, shuddering sob of pure relief, collapsing back into her chair as tears streamed freely down her face. "Thank God... thank God..."
"She is a remarkably strong little girl," Dr. Vance continued gently. "Her body has a long road of physical healing ahead of us, and she will need comprehensive psychological and medical support, but she is out of immediate mortal danger. She’s going to survive this."
Detective Callahan stepped forward, shaking Dr. Vance’s hand. "Thank you, Doctor. Your swift action and detailed documentation saved her life today. Also, we will need copies of all surgical notes and physical findings for the criminal case file."
"They are already being digitized and forwarded to your department's secure server," Dr. Vance nodded. "Furthermore, our hospital social workers and child trauma therapists are already assigned to Ava’s case. They will be there when she wakes up to ensure she feels safe and supported every step of the way."
"Can I see her?" Lauren asked, looking up with desperate, pleading eyes. "Can I go into the ICU right now?"
May you like
"You can," Dr. Vance smiled gently. "Just remember she is still asleep under anesthesia. Keep your voice soft, hold her hand, and let her know her mother is right there by her side."
As Lauren walked down the sterile, brightly lit corridor toward the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, guided by a sympathetic nurse, her mind settled into a fierce, unbreakable resolve. The nightmare wasn't over—there were court dates, therapy sessions, and a long physical recovery ahead. But the worst, most terrifying veil of darkness had been lifted. The truth was out in the open, the monster was running from a net that was rapidly closing around him, and her daughter was alive.
