Chapter 5 - The Detective’s Arrival

Ten minutes felt like ten years.

Lauren sat on a hard plastic chair in the family consultation room, her hands trembling uncontrollably as she clutched a paper cup of water she couldn't bring herself to drink. The digital clock on the wall ticked forward with agonizing slowness. Every second that passed meant Ava was lying under a cold scalpel, her small body fighting for survival against the devastating physical wreckage left behind by a man Lauren had trusted with her entire world.

The door clicked open, and two people stepped inside.

The first was a woman in her late forties with sharp, intelligent eyes, wearing a simple dark blazer over a blouse. Behind her stood a uniformed police officer, standing guard near the doorway.

"Mrs. Hale?" the woman asked, her voice calm, professional, but laced with an undeniable sharpness. "I am Detective Sarah Callahan of the Child Protection and Special Victims Unit. This is Officer Miller."

Lauren looked up, her eyes red-rimmed and hollow. She didn't say anything; she just gave a slow, mechanical nod.

Detective Callahan closed the door softly, ensuring privacy, and pulled up a chair directly across from Lauren. She didn't use the overly sweet, patronizing tone people often reserve for grieving victims; instead, she spoke to Lauren with the respectful, direct gravity of an equal.

"I know this is the darkest moment of your life, Mrs. Hale, and Dr. Vance has briefed me on Ava's medical status," Detective Callahan said gently, leaning forward. "The surgical team is working on her right now. We need to act quickly, intelligently, and decisively. Right now, our priority is Ava’s safety and bringing the perpetrator into custody."

"Daniel," Lauren whispered, the name feeling toxic on her tongue. "His name is Daniel Vance—no, Daniel Hayes. My husband."

"We already have his name, his vehicle registration, and his current location," Detective Callahan said, her eyes flashing with a cold, steely light. "Our tactical units were dispatched to your residence ten minutes ago. If he is still at the house, he will be in custody before he realizes what has happened."

"He was... he was so normal," Lauren sobbed, burying her face in her hands as the emotional dam finally broke completely. "How could I have been so blind? He stayed home with her all weekend. He made dinner. He looked me in the eye on Sunday night and told me she just had a stomachache from pizza. He lied to my face, Detective. He manipulated me into ignoring my own daughter's cries for help!"

Detective Callahan reached across the table, placing a firm, grounding hand over Lauren's trembling fingers.

"Do not blame yourself, Mrs. Hale. Predators like him are masters of deception, manipulation, and camouflage," Detective Callahan said firmly. "They don't wear signs around their necks. They blend into families, they act charming, and they isolate their victims when they think no one is watching. The only person responsible for this horrific crime is Daniel Hayes."

Lauren took a ragged, shaky breath, wiping her tears away with the back of her sleeve. The wave of grief was suddenly overtaken by an icy, absolute surge of protective fury. The sadness melted away, replaced by a fierce, unyielding determination. She would not break. Not yet. Ava needed a mother who would fight for her every step of the way.

"Is he still at the house?" Lauren asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, steady calm.

Before Detective Callahan could answer, the small radio clipped to the officer's lapel crackled to life with a burst of static.
