Chapter 3 - Sins of the Father

As the hours dragged toward 4:00 AM, the medicine struggled to pull Noah back from the edge. The monitors beeped in rhythmic, agonizing intervals. Harper sat in a chair beside the bed, holding Noah’s small, hot hand, wiping his forehead with a cool cloth.
Dante entered the room silently. He had shed his heavy coat, rolling the sleeves of his black shirt up to his elbows, revealing the dark ink of old tattoos creeping up his forearms.
He pulled a wooden chair to the opposite side of the bed and sat down. For the first time in five years, the powerful mafia kingpin looked vulnerable.
“He has your nose,” Dante murmured, his eyes fixed on Noah’s pale, sweat-streaked face. “And your hair.”
“He has your temper,” Harper said quietly, her voice hoarse. “He refuses to sleep when he’s upset, and he hates the crust on his bread.”
Dante’s fingers twitched on his knee. “Why, Harper? Why keep him in the shadows? You lived in cheap apartments... you paid in cash... you struggled while I sat on millions.”
Harper looked up, her gaze steady despite the dark circles under her eyes. “Look at this room, Dante. Look at the guards outside. Look at how you walked in here like you owned the hospital. I left you because I didn't want my child growing up in a world where violence is the answer to everything. I didn't want him taking a bullet meant for you.”
“I would have built a fortress around him!” Dante growled quietly.
“A fortress is still a prison!” Harper hissed back. “I gave him a life where he could play in the park without four armed men watching him from a black SUV. I gave him peace!”
Dante bowed his head. The silence between them was deafening, filled only by the rhythmic hum of the oxygen pump.
Suddenly, Noah groaned. His eyes fluttered open, glassy and unfocused from the fever. He shifted his head, his small hand twitching in Harper’s grip.
“Mama...”
“I’m here, sweetie,” Harper leaned down immediately, kissing his forehead. “Mama’s right here.”
Noah’s gaze drifted slowly to the tall man sitting on the other side of the bed. “Who... who is that?”
Harper froze. She looked across the bed at Dante.
Dante’s breath caught in his throat. The ruthless man who had commanded thousands of soldiers in the Ravenport underworld was paralyzed, staring at his son with wide, terrified eyes.
“He’s...” Harper’s throat tightened. She looked at Dante’s trembling hands, seeing the raw heartbreak in his eyes. She couldn't lie to her boy anymore. Not tonight. “He’s your father, Noah.”
Noah stared at Dante through his fevered hazy eyes. “Father? Like... the superheroes?”
A single tear escaped Dante’s eye, slipping down his rough cheek before he could wipe it away. He leaned forward, gently taking Noah’s tiny, burning hand in his massive palm.
“Not a superhero, little man,” Dante whispered softly, his voice full of a reverence no one had ever heard from him. “Just a man who is going to make sure nothing ever hurts you again.”
Noah smiled faintly, his eyelids growing heavy. “You look big... like a mountain.”
“I’m your mountain,” Dante promised, pressing his forehead against the side of Noah’s bed. “Go to sleep, son. I’m holding the fort.”
Noah fell back into a deep, heavy sleep, but ten minutes later, the heart monitor began to beep erratically.
The heart rate spiked to 180. The oxygen monitor dropped below 85%.

Dr. Reeves and three nurses rushed in. “He’s going into septic shock! Swelling in the brain stem is rising! Prepare for emergency intubation!”
Harper screamed as she was pulled back by a nurse. Dante caught her in his arms, holding her tightly as she sobbed against his chest, both of them forced to watch the medical team fight for their son’s life.
