Chapter 4 - The Blood-Stained Package

The air inside the solarium turned instantly glacial. Viktor stood near the doorway, holding the blood-stained envelope as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike. Lorenzo’s eyes locked onto the package, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked along his cheek.
“Bring it here,” Lorenzo commanded, his voice deadly calm.
Viktor crossed the room and placed the envelope on the wrought-iron table. The seal was stamped in red wax—a stylized compass with a broken needle. The insignia of The Architect. Sophia stared at the wax seal, her breath catching in her throat, her body freezing with absolute terror. She recognized that symbol. It was carved into the wooden desk in Marcus’s office on the night he died.
“Open it,” Lorenzo instructed, not taking his eyes off the envelope.
Viktor pulled a tactical knife from his belt, carefully sliced open the flap, and extracted a single sheet of heavy cream-colored paper along with a small, tarnished silver locket. Sophia gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
“That’s... that’s my mother’s locket,” Sophia choked out, her knees buckling slightly before she caught the edge of the marble table for support. “I left it in our old apartment in Queens when we fled. How did they—”
Lorenzo picked up the paper. Written across the center in neat, block-printed letters was a chilling message:
“You cannot protect everyone, Lorenzo. The wolf is already inside the fold. Hand over the girl and her mother by midnight, or the entire house burns.”
Lorenzo read the words once. Then twice. Slowly, deliberately, he folded the paper and placed it back on the table. When he looked up, his expression was no longer just terrifying—it was apocalyptic.
“Viktor,” Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.
“Boss?”
“Lock down the entire estate. Activate Protocol Zero. No one enters, no one leaves. Cut all external communication feeds except our encrypted military-grade channel. And double the guard rotation around the western staff quarters.”
“Protocol Zero?” Viktor’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. “Boss, that means bringing the entire compound into absolute blackout. If the board or our associates find out—”
“Let them try to find out,” Lorenzo interrupted, cutting Viktor off with a glare that could shatter stone. “Anyone outside these gates right now is either a target or a traitor. Move!”
“Yes, sir!” Viktor turned and bolted from the solarium, his heavy combat boots slamming against the floor.
Lorenzo turned his attention back to Sophia, who was trembling violently, staring at the silver locket on the table. बाला, her little girl was somewhere in the western wing, completely unaware that a pack of wolves was circling the estate.
“They know you’re here,” Sophia whispered, tears streaming down her face. “They’ve been tracking us for years, and now I’ve brought them straight to your doorstep. Mr. Moretti, you should throw us out. Let us go. If you keep us here, they will destroy everything you’ve built.”
Lorenzo stepped forward, closing the distance between them. He reached out and gripped her by the shoulders, his touch firm, grounding, and undeniably powerful.
“Listen to me, Sophia,” Lorenzo said, looking straight into her tear-filled eyes. “No one takes anyone from this house. Not while I’m breathing. My wife was stolen from me because I didn’t see the threat hiding in the shadows. I was arrogant, and I paid the ultimate price. I will not make that mistake twice.”
Sophia looked up into his dark, fierce eyes, finding a strange anchor of safety in the eye of the storm.
“How do we fight a ghost?” she asked. “We don’t even know who The Architect is inside your organization.”
“We find out tonight,” Lorenzo replied, releasing her shoulders and walking over to a hidden wall panel behind the towering tropical plants. He pressed a sequence of buttons, and a concealed metal safe clicked open. Inside sat a heavy tactical submachine gun, several magazine clips, and a secure laptop displaying a live grid of the estate’s security cameras. “Whoever dropped that package had help from the inside. The perimeter sensors can only be disabled by someone with Level-4 administrative clearance.”
“Level-4 clearance?” Sophia asked. “Who has that?”
“Only three people in this entire mansion,” Lorenzo said grimly, sliding a clip into the weapon. “Myself, Viktor... and my chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance.”
Sophia’s breath hitched. Marcus Vance. The impeccably dressed, smooth-talking lawyer who had shaken her hand just yesterday when she passed him in the hallway.

“Vance,” Sophia whispered.
“Or someone using his credentials,” Lorenzo added coldly. “Either way, the trap is set. Now we wait for them to walk into it.”
