Chapter 8 - Midnight at the Hangar

The private hangar at O’Hare International Airport was cavernous, cold, and bathed in the harsh white glare of industrial overhead lights. Outside, a torrential Chicago rain beat relentlessly against the reinforced glass windows, turning the tarmac into a dark, reflective mirror.
I stood beside the open bay doors, dressed in a tailored black overcoat, my hands tucked into my pockets. Behind me stood Viktor and six of his most elite operatives, dressed in tactical gear, blending seamlessly into the shadows.
A sleek, black-tail Gulfstream G650 touched down smoothly on the rain-slicked runway, its twin jet engines whining as it taxied toward our designated sector. The aircraft came to a complete stop, the boarding stairs hissed downward, and the cabin door swung open.
A tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate gray cashmere suit stepped out onto the metal platform, holding a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. Marcus Sterling had arrived.
He descended the stairs, flanked by two private security guards carrying submachine guns concealed beneath heavy raincoats. Sterling scanned the hangar with narrowed eyes, instantly spotting me standing alone near the center of the floor.
A smug, arrogant smile touched Sterling's lips as he walked toward me, his boots clicking rhythmically against the concrete.
"Everett Lawson," Sterling called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "I must admit, I was surprised to receive Richard's message. I didn't take you for a man who dabbled in family heirlooms and forgotten corporate vendettas."
I didn't move. I didn't smile. I simply watched him approach, my hands remaining comfortably inside my coat pockets.
"You came all the way from Zurich for a stack of old papers, Marcus," I replied, my voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet hangar. "That either makes you exceptionally brave, or remarkably stupid."
Sterling stopped ten feet away, his security guards spreading out to flank him. He chuckled, a dry, humorless sound.
"Papers that control billions in biotech assets, Everett," Sterling said, tapping the handcuffed briefcase. "Patents that your little girlfriend tried to hide from the world. Where is she, anyway? Still running?"
"She's dead, Marcus," I said softly.
Sterling blinked, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his features before he recovered his composure. "A pity. But collateral damage is to be expected when you play with global syndicates."
"You're right about collateral damage," I agreed, nodding slightly toward the shadows behind him.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered and died, plunging the hangar into sudden darkness—save for the emergency red beacons spinning silently near the ceiling. Before Sterling’s guards could even raise their weapons, Viktor and his operatives moved like ghosts out of the dark.
Within three seconds, both guards were disarmed, forced to their knees, and zip-tied against the concrete floor.
Sterling spun around in a panic, his face draining of all color as he realized he had walked directly into a trap. "What is the meaning of this?! You can't touch me! I have diplomatic immunity through our corporate holdings in—"
"You have nothing," I interrupted, stepping forward until I was towering over him. "No immunity. No leverage. And certainly no exit."
I reached out, grabbed the handle of the handcuffed briefcase, and snapped the cheap plastic lock with a sharp twist of my foot against the metal casing, sending documents scattering across the wet floor.
"You hunted the mother of my children," I whispered, my voice dropping into that terrifying, icy register that had brought corporations to their knees. "You terrorized my family. And you thought you could walk into my city and take what was mine."
Sterling trembled, looking around wildly for an escape route that didn't exist. "Please... Lawson... we can make a deal! Shares, equity, anything you want!"
I didn't answer. I simply pulled out my secure satellite phone and dialed a pre-programmed number.

"Federal marshals," I said into the receiver, keeping my eyes locked on Sterling's terrified face. "The package is delivered. You can pick up Mr. Sterling and his associates outside hangar four. All financial ledgers and confession recordings have been uploaded to federal servers."
As the wail of approaching sirens began to echo faintly from outside the hangar doors, Sterling collapsed to his knees, defeated by the very empire he thought he could manipulate.
