Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Study

I stood in the silent kitchen, listening to the water running over my destroyed phone in the sink. The house felt hollow, stripped of warmth. Eli thought he had won. He thought destroying the phone and hiding June would break my spirit entirely.

He didn't know about the cloud backup.

When I had photographed the medicine cabinet earlier, the application on my phone hadn't just saved the images locally; it had synced automatically to my old tablet upstairs—a device Eli didn’t even know I still used because the charging port was loose.

I ran up the stairs to our guest bedroom, digging to the bottom of my old college trunk. My fingers brushed against the cold metal of the iPad. I plugged it into a portable power bank, praying the battery would hold.

The screen flickered to life.

Syncing... 2 new files downloaded.

My breath hitched. The upload to the cloud had completed just a fraction of a second before the phone was unplugged from the wall downstairs.

I tapped the first file: the video titled 8:10 A.M.

The screen lit up with the interior of Eli’s home office. The camera angle was fixed, pointing at his desk from a hidden mount near the bookshelf. Eli was sitting at his computer, typing rapidly.

Then, audio began to play through the tablet speakers.

“If I increase the dosage of the phenobarbital,” Eli muttered aloud to himself on the video, “she won't wake up until noon. Her motor skills will look sluggish on camera. Perfect for the custody hearing.”

My hands flew to my mouth. Phenobarbital. A powerful barbiturate. He wasn't just gaslighting me; he was slowly poisoning me, making me dependent on him, rewriting my reality frame by frame.

I tapped the second file. It was a recorded phone call between Eli and an unknown attorney.

“Just make sure the medical examiner signs off on the history of substance abuse,” Eli’s voice echoed from the iPad. “Once she’s committed, the house and the trust fund default to me under the prenuptial clause. My mother will play along; she’s terrified of being put in a home herself. Just keep her isolated.”

The evidence was overwhelming. It was concrete, undeniable proof of a premeditated conspiracy to steal my child and my life.

Suddenly, the front door downstairs opened and closed with a heavy thud.

“Claire!” Eli’s voice boomed up the stairwell. “I’m back. And I brought company.”
