The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of amber and violet.
We walked home from Marlene’s apartment together, June skipping ahead on the concrete sidewalk, her small hand clutching a balloon she had won at the park. The city streetlights flickered to life one by one, casting a warm, steady glow along our path.
I stopped for a moment, taking a deep breath of the cool evening air. My hands were steady. My thoughts were clear. The blackouts, the confusion, the fear—they were all ghosts of a past that no longer held any power over me.
“Mommy, hurry up!” June called back, spinning around with a bright, infectious grin. “You’re walking like a turtle!”
