Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

George froze, his hand hovering over the silver handle of the balcony door. "What did you say?"
"The money transfers," I said, pulling my waterproof phone back out of my bag and showing him the live secure screen. "Did you really think I didn't notice the subtle anomalies in the ledger three months ago? I’m an attorney, Gregory. I spent thirty years drafting ironclad corporate contracts before you even learned how to use a spreadsheet."
George’s face paled. "The digital signatures... I verified them myself!"
"You verified a mirror server," Ethan interjected, stepping up beside me with a sharp, victorious smile. "Mother set up a dummy corporation back in May. Every dollar you thought you were siphoning from Carter Global was actually being routed directly into a federal escrow trap monitored by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network."
The door to the study burst open. Four armed police officers and two federal agents stepped into the room, guns drawn.
"Gregory Vance, also known as George Mitchell," the lead agent announced, holding up a badge. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny. Put your hands behind your back."
George let out a guttural scream of rage and lunged toward me, but Ethan moved instantly, tackling the older man to the floor before he could lay a finger on me. The officers swarmed in, wrestling George into handcuffs as he cursed and shouted threats.
Vanessa sank to her knees on the rug, sobbing uncontrollably as she watched her father being restrained. "Please... Ethan, please tell them I had nothing to do with the money! I just did what he asked!"
"You'll have to explain that to the prosecutors, Vanessa," Ethan said coldly, turning his back on her as the officers led both George and a hysterical Vanessa out of the study in handcuffs.
As the noise in the hallway faded, the study fell into a heavy, quiet stillness. The red and blue lights continued to flash softly against the walls.
Ethan turned to me, looking at my soaked hair, my ruined secondhand clothes, and the bruises on my knees where I had fallen onto the lawn. He fell to his knees before me once again, burying his head in my hands.
"I am so sorry, Mother," he choked out, tears finally streaming down his face. "I brought those monsters into our lives. I let her hurt you. I stood inside drinking champagne while you were degraded on our own lawn."
I sat down on the leather sofa and pulled my son into my arms, running my fingers through his hair just as I had done when he was a little boy.
"You didn't know, Ethan," I murmured gently. "They built a trap specifically designed for a kind, trusting heart like yours. But the mark of a true Carter isn't whether you fall into a trap—it's how you stand up after it breaks."
"I was so blind," he whispered. "I almost gave her everything."
"You didn't," I reminded him. "You listened to the truth. Now, we clean up this mess. Together."
Suddenly, the young server who had tried to help me on the lawn appeared at the open doorway, holding a warm, dry wool blanket and a steaming mug of tea. He looked nervous, hovering uncertainly at the threshold.
"Excuse me, ma'am... Mr. Carter..." the young man said softly. "I brought this for your mother. I... I hope it's okay."
I smiled warmly at him, motioning for him to come inside. "Thank you, young man. What is your name?"
"It's Leo, ma'am," he replied, handing me the blanket and the warm mug. "Leo Miller."
I wrapped the blanket tightly around my shoulders, feeling warmth return to my body for the first time all evening. I looked closely at Leo's kind face, noticing the honest, hard-working pride in his eyes.
"Leo," I said, taking a sip of the warm tea. "How would you like a permanent job managing the events and guest services for Carter Global's estates?"
May you like
Leo's eyes widened in utter shock. "Ma'am? I... I'm just a seasonal server..."
"You were the only person on that lawn who showed humanity when an old woman was down," I said firmly. "That makes you far more qualified than anyone else who attended today."
