Chapter 4 - The Unraveling Lie

The silence in the room was deafening. Ethan stared at George as if the man had spoken in an alien language. His hands shook, his knuckles white as he grasped the edge of Arthur’s oak desk to steady himself.

"You're lying," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You're a fraud and a thief. You'll say anything to destroy this family."

"Am I lying, Eleanor?" George turned his cold, gray eyes toward me. "Tell him. Look at the handwriting on that decree. That's Arthur’s signature, isn't it? Look at the seal from the court in Cook County."

I looked down at the paper. My vision blurred with tears, but I recognized Arthur’s firm, slanted cursive anywhere. It was indeed his signature. But as I traced the faded ink with my thumb, my training as a corporate lawyer—a career I had retired from decades ago to build our life—kicked in.

I noticed something wrong. Something George had overlooked in his desperate rush to claim victory.

"The seal is real," I said softly, wiping a tear from my cheek as I looked up. "And Arthur’s signature is real. But this document isn't an adoption decree for Ethan."

George’s smug smile faltered slightly. " what are you talking about? It has his date of birth! It has—"

"It has the date of birth for a child born in Cook County Memorial Hospital," I interrupted, my voice growing stronger, firmer, echoing off the high ceilings. "A child who tragically passed away three hours after birth. Arthur signed this paper as the hospital's board chairman to authorize the release of funds for the baby's burial because the biological father—you, Gregory—had abandoned your wife and gambled away every penny you had."

Vanessa gasped, looking at her father with wide, horrified eyes. "Dad... is that true?"

"She's lying!" George barked, his face flushing deep red. "She's trying to manipulate you!"

"I carry the memories of the day Ethan was born in my heart, not on a forged piece of paper," I said, stepping right up to George, meeting his venomous glare without flinching. "I went into labor with Ethan in a small clinic in Memphis. I suffered for eighteen hours before he was brought into this world. I watched the doctor cut the cord. I held him against my skin before Arthur even walked into the room!"

I turned to Ethan, reaching out to gently touch his cheek. "You are my son, Ethan. In every way that matters, in blood, in soul, and in love. This man is nothing to you."

Ethan closed his eyes for a brief moment, taking a deep, ragged breath. When he opened them, the doubt was gone, replaced by an icy resolve. He looked at George with pure contempt.

"You engineered this entire scheme," Ethan said coldly. "You sent Vanessa to target me, using a fake tragic backstory to earn my sympathy. You tried to make me believe I was related to her so I would break down, yield control of Carter Global, and hand over the family fortune out of shame and confusion."

"Ethan, I didn't know!" Vanessa cried out, tears finally breaking through her heavy makeup. "I swear to you, I didn't know about any of this! My father just told me that your family ruined us and that we were taking back what was ours!"

"You stood on that lawn and sprayed my mother with cold water like she was an animal, Vanessa," Ethan said, his voice devoid of any lingering affection. "You showed me exactly who you are, with or without your father's lies."

Siren lights suddenly reflected against the high windows of the study, casting red and blue flashes across the room. The sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the grand staircase below as law enforcement officers breached the mansion.

George’s eyes darted frantically toward the balcony. "You think you've won, Eleanor? The money is already gone! Transferred to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under your name. By tomorrow morning, the federal government will freeze every Carter asset for money laundering!"

"I wouldn't be so sure about that, Gregory," I replied with a calm smile.
