Chapter 5 - CONFRONTING THE MATRIARCH

With the toxicologist’s report and Detective Miller’s preliminary findings officially documented, Brandon and I returned to the family home by late afternoon. This time, we weren't visiting as dutiful family members. We were returning to demand accountability.

Detective Miller and two local police officers accompanied us in a separate cruiser, parking discreetly down the leafy suburban street.

When Brandon unlocked the heavy mahogany front door, the house was deathly quiet. The fresh flowers from the day before were already beginning to wilt in the afternoon heat. We found Madeline sitting in the formal study, sipping green tea from a delicate porcelain cup while reviewing legal documents spread across her mahogany desk.

She didn’t even look up when we walked in. She simply took another sip of her tea and let out a cold, sardonic chuckle.

“I wondered how long it would take you two to crawl back,” Madeline said smoothly, setting her cup down. “Did you realize your little bastard isn't strong enough to carry the Hayes family name, Brandon? Or did the doctors finally tell you what I’ve known all along?”

Brandon stepped forward, his voice trembling with a rage I had never witnessed in him before.

“You poisoned my son, Mother,” Brandon said, each word dropping like lead. “You gave him heavy metals disguised as an immunity tonic. The hospital has the lab results, and the police have the bottle.”

For a split second, Madeline’s composure wavered. Her eyes widened slightly, but she quickly recovered, sneering as she stood up from her chair.

“Poisoned him? What absolute nonsense!” Madeline scoffed, raising her voice defensively. “I gave the boy a traditional herbal supplement to build his constitution! If his body is weak, it’s because of her tainted bloodline!” She pointed a manicured finger directly at me. “I protected this family for forty years, Brandon. I built this estate while your father was a ghost. I will not let some outsider and her sickly child ruin everything I’ve preserved!”

“Your game is over, Madeline,” a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.

Detective Miller stepped into the study, flanked by the two uniformed police officers. He pulled a folded document from his jacket pocket and unfolded it.

“Mrs. Madeline Hayes, you are being detained for questioning in connection with the administration of toxic substances to a minor and child endangerment,” Detective Miller announced clearly.

Madeline’s face went completely pale. The regal, untouchable facade finally shattered completely.

“You can’t do this!” she screamed, her voice cracking as the officers stepped forward to place cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. “I am a Hayes! This is my house! Brandon, tell them to stop this insanity!”

Brandon looked at his mother—the woman who had raised him, manipulated him, and nearly killed his son for the sake of power and control. His expression remained unshakeable.

“You chose your property and your power over your own flesh and blood, Mother,” Brandon said quietly. “Now live with the consequences.”
