Chapter 3 - UNRAVELING THE SECRETS

The clinical smell of the hospital room felt suffocating as Brandon and I sat in silence, processing the doctor's words. Luke was resting peacefully now, hooked up to a quiet heart monitor that beeped in a slow, steady rhythm. The toxicological screening would take twenty-four hours, but the seeds of suspicion had already taken root in our minds.
Brandon stood up, pacing the tight space between the visitor chair and the bed. His phone buzzed continuously in his pocket—missed calls and messages from his relatives demanding to know if Luke was okay, and others forwarding angry voice notes from Madeline claiming we had overreacted to a family gathering.
“She said something on the patio, Elena,” Brandon muttered, staring out the reinforced glass window toward the hospital courtyard. “She looked at me and asked if I was sure Luke was my son. That wasn't just a cruel insult to hurt us. That was a calculated statement.”
“What are you implying, Brandon?” I asked, my heart aching as I stroked Luke’s soft brown hair. “Do you think your mother is implying something about our marriage?”
“No,” Brandon said, turning to look at me, his jaw clenched tight. “My mother has never liked you because she didn’t choose you for me. But she has always been obsessed with our family lineage, our name, and our estate. If there is something wrong with Luke’s blood work—if he has heavy metal traces in his system—and my mother acted like she knew about it before anyone else... we need to look closer at what she has been giving him.”
Every weekend, whenever we visited the family home, Madeline would insist on feeding Luke herself. She always claimed she was treating him to special homemade remedies, organic juices, and traditional tonics that she swore would make him strong. I had always thought she was just trying to play the doting grandmother behind my back to look good, but now a cold shudder ran down my spine.
“You don’t think she would...” I couldn’t even finish the sentence. Poisoning her own grandson? It sounded like a plot from a twisted psychological thriller, not real life.
“My mother is a woman who holds grudges for decades,” Brandon said grimly. “And she hates anything she cannot control. Let’s go back to the house while Luke sleeps. The nurses are watching him closely here. We need to check his room at her house.”
An hour later, we pulled up to the large iron gates of the family estate. The house was completely dark. The relatives had all cleared out, mortified by Madeline’s explosive outburst. Brandon had his own set of master keys. We unlocked the front door and stepped into the grand foyer, which still smelled faintly of the hibiscus tea and spices from earlier that day.
We tiptoed up the stairs and made our way to the guest suite where Luke and I always stayed during family visits. The room was untouched, except for a small nightstand where Luke kept his belongings.
Brandon opened the bedside drawer. Inside sat a small, amber glass bottle with a hand-labeled paper tag reading: Grandma’s Special Immunity Tonic.
I reached out and picked up the bottle, unscrewing the cap. A pungent, metallic, herbal scent rose from the dark liquid inside.

“She gave him a spoonful of this every single time we visited,” I whispered, horror washing over me. “She told me it was an old family recipe for children’s health.”
Brandon took the bottle from my hands, his eyes burning with fury. “We’re taking this straight back to the hospital for forensic testing. If my mother did this to my son, she is going to pay for it—legally and completely.”
