Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

Six months later, spring arrived in Greenwich with an explosion of color. The vast grounds of the Whitman estate were blanketed in vibrant green lawn, blooming white dogwood trees, and yellow daffodils. The gloomy, sorrowful estate that had once resembled a quiet mausoleum was now vibrant, glowing, and alive.

Derek sat at his desk in his home study, looking through the glass doors leading to the garden.

Out on the lawn, the triplets—now energetic, healthy five-year-olds—were playing tag with a golden retriever puppy Derek had adopted for them two months ago. Their laughter rang out across the grounds like silver bells, clear and completely unburdened by grief.

Beside the rose garden stood Clara. She wore a simple yellow sunbed dress, her hair catching the bright spring sunlight. She was laughing as she tossed a rubber ball for the puppy, her face radiant with happiness.

Derek stood up from his desk, carrying a small velvet box in his jacket pocket—a box he had carried with him for three weeks, waiting for the perfect moment.

He walked out onto the veranda and stepped down onto the lush grass. The boys saw him immediately.

"Daddy! Look! Barnaby learned how to sit!" Finn yelled, pointing at the tumbling golden puppy.

"That’s amazing, Finn!" Derek called back, walking past them toward Clara.

Clara turned as Derek approached. Her blue eyes sparkled with affection as she wiped a smudge of garden soil from her cheek. "Hey you," she said softly, stepping closer to him. "You’re done with work early today."

"I’m done with work forever on Friday afternoons," Derek reminded her with a warm smile, taking both of her hands in his.

He looked at her for a long moment, taking in the beauty of her face, the warmth in her spirit, and the profound peace she had brought into his life.

"Clara," Derek began, his voice dropping into a deep, gentle rhythm. "Nine months ago, I walked through the doors of this house carrying a darkness I thought would never leave me. I was losing my sons, I was losing myself, and I thought my life was over. And then... I stood in the doorway of the sunroom, and I heard my boys laugh for the first time in eight months."

Clara’s breath hitched, her eyes shimmering with emotional tears.

"You didn't just save my children, Clara," Derek continued, dropping down onto one knee on the soft green grass. "You saved my soul. You showed me that love isn't something we lose when someone leaves us... it’s something we rebuild together. I don't want to live another day of my life without you by my side."

Derek reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out the velvet box, and opened it. Inside rested a breathtaking, flawless three-carat oval diamond ring, flanked by three smaller blue sapphires—representing Finn, Eli, and Jasper.

"Clara Winslow," Derek said, looking up into her tear-filled eyes. "Will you marry me, and make us the happiest family in the world?"

Clara covered her mouth with her hands, tears of pure joy flowing freely down her cheeks.

Before she could speak, three pair of small feet came pounding across the lawn. Finn, Eli, and Jasper slid into the grass beside Derek, looking back and forth between their father and Clara.

"Is Clara gonna be our mom forever?" Jasper asked loudly, his face wide with excitement.

"Please say yes, Clara!" Eli shouted, jumping up and down. "Please!"

Clara wiped her tears, dropped to her knees right in front of Derek and the boys, and threw her arms around Derek’s neck, kissing him deeply.

"Yes!" Clara cried out, her voice filled with pure, boundless happiness. "Yes, Derek! A thousand times yes!"

The boys erupted into wild cheers, jumping on top of Derek and Clara, tumbling together into a heap on the sunny green lawn while the puppy barked happily around them. Derek pulled Clara tight against his chest, holding his three sons in his arms, feeling the warm spring sun shining down upon them all.
