Chapter 9 - Healing Old Wounds

Three days later, the storm had completely passed over Connecticut.
The sun broke through the clouds in brilliant rays of gold and azure, painting the rolling lawns of the Hartford estate in shimmering greens. The air was crisp, clean, and smelled of washed leaves and fresh earth.
In the sunlit master conservatory of the Hartford mansion, pale silk curtains fluttered softly in a light spring breeze.
Evelyn sat in a grand white armchair near the open french doors. She was wearing a soft cream-colored sweater, her face refreshed, her dark hair brushed back neatly. Sitting right in her lap, wrapped in a fresh yellow blanket, was her baby boy.
He was completely healthy. His cheeks were chubby and pink, his dark eyes sparkling as he cooed happily, watching the sunlight dance across the ceiling.
Around his neck, resting safely outside his clothes, was the green jade pendant—clean, polished, and glowing like an emerald heart.
Catherine sat on the footstool beside her sister, holding a cup of tea, a serene, radiant smile on her face that Richard hadn't seen in eight long years. The heavy, invisible shadow that had haunted her eyes since the day they met had vanished completely.
"He looks just like our father," Evelyn whispered softly, touching the baby’s tiny cheek. "He has his nose."
"He has your strength, Evie," Catherine said gently, reaching out to cover her sister’s hand. "You survived eight years of nightmare... and you protected him through all of it."
"I didn't protect him at the river," Evelyn’s eyes filled with soft tears, though she smiled. "A little angel did."
At that moment, the conservatory doors swung open.
Mia walked in, dressed in her favourite pink dress, holding a small wooden rattle in her hands. Behind her came Richard, wearing a casual navy sweater, carrying a tray of fresh pastries and juice.
"Is the baby awake?" Mia asked, stepping lightly across the rug, her little voice full of excitement.
"He is awake, Mia," Evelyn smiled warmly, leaning down so the little girl could see. "Come here, sweetie."
Mia walked over on tiptoe, stepping up to the chair. She set the wooden rattle gently beside the baby's hands.
The baby boy cooed, waving his tiny arms in the air, and his small fingers wrapped tightly around Mia’s little index finger.
Mia giggled, her eyes shining with absolute delight. "He likes me! Look, Auntie Evelyn, he's holding my hand!"
"He knows who saved him, Mia," Evelyn said, her voice rich with deep, eternal gratitude. "He will know your name for the rest of his life."
Richard set the tray down on the glass coffee table and stepped behind Catherine, placing his hands comfortably on her shoulders. Catherine leaned her head back against his chest, looking up at him with deep love and peace.
"The federal prosecutors finalized the papers this morning," Richard announced softly, looking at Evelyn. "Julian Chen and his entire executive board have been formally indicted under federal racketeering and international conspiracy charges. Their assets have been frozen globally."
"And the Lin estate?" Evelyn asked quietly.
"The Swiss courts recognized the lineage documents yesterday," Richard smiled faintly. "The entire family trust—the shipping lines, the holding companies, everything—has been restored to you and Catherine. You are completely free, Evelyn. No one is coming for you ever again."
May you like
Evelyn let out a long, shuddering sigh, resting her head against the back of the chair as she looked out at the sunny gardens. "Free..." she whispered. "It feels like a dream."
"It's not a dream," Catherine said softly. "You're home."
