Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Betrayal

From the main doorway, a pair of quick, frantic footsteps echoed across the marble hall.
"Evelyn!"
Catherine broke past the security detail, running into the room with tears streaming down her face. She paid no attention to Julian Chen, no attention to the laser sights or the weapons. Her entire world narrowed down to the woman tied to the chair.
"Catherine?!" Evelyn gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at her sister in utter disbelief. "Cat... is that really you? Oh God, Cat!"
Catherine dropped to her knees beside the chair, her hands frantically working at the thick ropes binding Evelyn’s wrists. "It's me, Evie. It's me. I'm here. You're safe."
"My baby..." Evelyn sobbed instantly, her entire body shaking as the ropes fell away. She grabbed Catherine’s arms, her eyes wide with terror and anguish. "Catherine, my baby! Chen’s men took him—they took him an hour ago! They were going to throw him in the river! Is he—"
"He's alive!" Catherine screamed, pulling her sister into a fierce, suffocating embrace. "He's alive, Evelyn! Mia found him! My daughter found him at the river edge! He's safe at the hospital right now!"
Evelyn let out a sound that was half-gasp, half-shriek—a pure, unadulterated release of a mother's agonizing grief turning into miraculous relief. She buried her face in Catherine’s neck, weeping hysterically, repeating her sister's name like a prayer.
Across the room, Julian Chen’s face went completely grey. His hands, still raised in the air, began to visibly shake.
"The... the child survived?" Chen stammered, his confident facade instantly crumbling into sheer terror. "That river was overflowing... it was impossible..."
Richard turned slowly to face Chen, his expression cold as ice. He stepped up to the glass desk, looking down at the open briefcase filled with stolen blood money and forged identity documents.
"You thought you could erase the entire Lin family lineage, didn't you, Chen?" Richard said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Eight years ago, you staged the boat explosion in Singapore. You stole thirty percent of Lin Enterprises' holding assets, bribed local officials, and established Chen Global to launder the remainder in North America."
"You know nothing about Asian corporate governance, Hartford!" Chen spat, trying to regain his composure. "That money was ours! The Lin family was weak! They were soft! They were going to sell the shipping lines to European conglomerates!"
"So you hunted down a pregnant woman?" Richard stepped closer, leaning over the desk, towering over the older man. "You kept her imprisoned in secret offshore locations for years to ensure no legitimate heir could ever contest your legal claim to the Lin estate. And when she escaped and had her child, you decided to drown an infant in a storm?"
"It was business!" Chen yelled, his eyes darting frantically toward the floor where his phone lay. "He was a bloodline liability! As long as a male heir carrying the Lin lineage existed, the trust funds in Switzerland couldn't be fully liquidated by my board!"
"It was murder," Richard corrected coldly. "And you failed."
Richard pulled out his satellite phone and pressed a single button, setting it on speaker on the desk.
“District Attorney’s office, this is Prosecutor Williams,” a sharp voice sounded through the speaker.
"Williams," Richard said into the phone. "This is Richard Hartford. I am currently standing inside the Saybrook estate with Julian Chen. I have full video and audio documentation of his confession regarding kidnappings, attempted infanticide, transnational fraud, and arson."
Chen’s eyes widened in horror. "Hartford! Wait! We can negotiate! I'll transfer fifty percent of the Singapore terminals to Hartford Industries! Sixty percent!"
"I don't want your money, Chen," Richard said softly, looking at his sister-in-law, who was now standing, leaning on Catherine’s shoulder. "My family has plenty of money. What we wanted was justice."
Outside, the distant, rising wail of dozens of police sirens began to slice through the storm. Red and blue strobes began to illuminate the fogged windows of the estate as state police cruisers, federal agents, and tactical ambulances surrounded the perimeter.

Vance stepped forward, grabbed Julian Chen by his collar, slammed him down onto his own glass desk, and pulled his arms behind his back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Julian Chen," Vance said gruffly. "You are under arrest."
