PART 5: The Confession

—I didn't mean for it to happen like this... —Verónica’s voice was barely a whisper, broken and hollow.

She kept her knees pulled to her chest, staring at the floorboards where Mateo had just been rescued.

—You didn't mean to kidnap my son? You didn't mean to keep him in a hole for nearly a year while police searched the entire country? —I stepped forward, my voice rising, the fury boiling over. —Look at him, Verónica! Look at what you did to a seven-year-old boy!

—It wasn't me! Not directly! —she sobbed, finally lifting her tear-streaked face. Her eyes were wide with a frantic, desperate terror. —It was... it was Eduardo. My husband.

The name hit the room like a physical blow. Eduardo. The charming, successful corporate lawyer who always traveled for business, who had donated thousands of pesos to the search fund when Mateo first vanished, who had helped design and finance this very house in Querétaro.

—Eduardo? —I repeated, the name tasting like ash in my mouth. —What are you talking about? Why would Eduardo take Mateo?

Verónica buried her face in her hands again, her shoulders shaking violently.

—He... he has debts. Massive debts with dangerous people. When his business collapsed last year, they threatened to kill us, to take everything. Eduardo was desperate. He found out... he found out about an illegal adoption syndicate, people willing to pay a fortune for a healthy, un-papered child. He planned to take a child from Guadalajara, transport him secretly, and sell him to a family abroad to clear his name and save his skin.

I stared at her, my stomach churning with nausea.

—And you helped him? You helped your own brother's son get sold?

—No! —she screamed, her voice cracking. —I didn't know until the afternoon it happened! Eduardo brought him here in the trunk of his car, hidden inside a reinforced container while you were all distracted at the grill. When I found out what he had done, I threatened to call the police immediately. But Eduardo... he locked me in the guest room. He said if I breathed a word, he would frame me as an accomplice, take everything I own, and make sure Mateo was shipped overseas where we would never find him.

She paused, gasping for air as fresh tears streamed down her cheeks.

—And then... before Eduardo could complete the exchange, the police raids started nationwide. The media attention was too intense. The buyers backed out, terrified of getting caught. Eduardo panicked. He boarded up the crawlspace, threatened Mateo to keep absolute silence, and told me that if anyone ever came looking, we had to keep this house at all costs. When we moved here from Guadalajara, Eduardo had this custom flooring installed to ensure no one would ever hear a sound from below.
