PART 10: The Lemon Tree

One warm Saturday afternoon, exactly one year and two months after that fateful Sunday in our backyard, I was standing by the grill again, flipping meat for lunch.

The smell of charcoal smoke and grilled steak drifted through the yard, mixing with the sweet scent of blooming lemons.

From the open back door, the sound of children laughing echoed across the patio.

—Dad! Pass the ball! —Mateo yelled, sprinting across the grass with a soccer ball at his feet, looking healthier, stronger, and happier than I had ever seen him.

Camila chased after him, giggling uncontrollably as she tried to intercept his pass.

Mariana walked out onto the patio, stepping up beside me and resting her head gently against my shoulder. She handed me a cold glass of lemonade, smiling as she watched our children play under the warm afternoon sun.

—Penny for your thoughts? —she asked softly.

I took a sip of the lemonade, wrapped my arm around her waist, and looked out at the bright, open yard.
