Chapter 6 - Gathering the Storm

While the healing process continued at home, a major storm was brewing in the legal arena. Rachel had hired a notoriously aggressive, high-profile divorce attorney in Chicago, determined to turn the situation into a messy, public media circus. She filed counter-claims, alleging that Michael was an unstable, neglectful father who had locked her out of their home in a fit of rage, fabricating evidence to deny her a fair marital settlement.
Michael’s response was swift and uncompromising. He didn't just hire a standard divorce lawyer; he retained a powerhouse legal team consisting of the top family law attorneys and criminal prosecutors in the state, led by his longtime friend and chief corporate counsel, Marcus Vance.
They met in Michael’s private home study, the table covered with documents, medical records, and digital drives.
"She’s playing a dangerous game, Michael," Marcus said, reviewing Rachel’s legal filing with a frown. "She’s trying to paint herself as the victim of a wealthy, controlling husband. She’s demanding temporary spousal support, full ownership of the estate, and joint custody of Noah."
Michael let out a cold, humorless laugh. "She wants custody of Noah? After what she did?"
"It’s a leverage tactic," Marcus explained. "She thinks you’ll pay her an exorbitant amount of money in a private settlement just to make her go away and keep the security footage out of the public eye. She knows a public trial could negatively affect your company's stock value."
Michael stood up, walking over to the window that looked out onto the backyard, where Lily was currently chasing Noah through the grass, both of them laughing joyfully. The sound of their happiness was the most precious thing he owned.
"Tell her legal team we reject every single one of their demands," Michael said, turning back to Marcus with a look of absolute determination. "No settlement. No nondisclosure agreements. No payouts. We are going to court."
Marcus raised an eyebrow. "A public trial means the media will catch wind of this, Michael. The footage will become public record. It will be intensely scrutinized."
"Good," Michael said firmly. "Let the world see exactly who she is. I want a complete, uncontested divorce. I want sole physical and legal custody of both Lily and Noah, with absolutely zero visitation rights for Rachel. Furthermore, I want the criminal prosecutors to fast-track the felony child abuse charges. I want her to face the full consequence of the law."
Marcus nodded, a fierce smile appearing on his face. "If that’s how you want to play it, Michael, we have more than enough ammunition to completely dismantle her. Her team has no idea what’s coming."

Over the next few weeks, Michael’s legal team worked tirelessly. They secured additional testimonies from former housekeepers who had worked briefly at the estate before being abruptly fired by Rachel. The stories they told matched the patterns of abuse—Rachel forcing Lily to clean the house while she spent thousands of dollars on online shopping and spa treatments, threatening the staff with legal ruin if they spoke to Michael.
Every piece of evidence was meticulously cataloged, every video clip timestamped, and every medical record verified. The trap was set. Rachel thought she was entering a standard divorce negotiation; in reality, she was walking into a legal execution.
