Chapter 5 - A Wedding in Black

Friday night arrived beneath a deluge of freezing winter rain.

The wind roared off the harbor, whipping the trees on the Marblehead property into violent shapes. Inside the estate, the air was suffocatingly still.

Evelyn sat in front of the vanity mirror in the bridal suite upstairs. She wore a stunning lace gown that trailed onto the dark wood floors, but her face was as pale as a corpse. Her hands trembled so violently she could barely hold her lipstick.

She knew what was supposed to happen tonight.

At 11:00 PM, Marcus Vance’s men would strike Pier 42, believing they were stealing Caleb’s fortune. In exchange, Vance had promised that Sophie would be dropped off at a designated location in South Boston at midnight. Evelyn had traded Caleb’s loyalty, his empire, and the lives of his men to save her sister.

She looked at her reflection in the glass and felt a profound, sickening self-hatred.

A quiet knock echoed at her door.

“Come in,” she choked out.

The door opened, and Caleb stepped inside. He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, looking impossibly imposing, handsome, and dangerous. But he wasn't wearing a groom's smile. His face was carved from granite.

Behind him stood two heavy-set men in dark suits—Caleb’s most ruthless enforcers, key lieutenants who usually handled execution orders.

Evelyn’s heart stopped. “Caleb? What... what is this? The ceremony isn't until tomorrow—”

“The wedding is canceled, Evelyn,” Caleb said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Evelyn stood up, her wedding dress sweeping around her legs. “What? What are you talking about?”

Caleb gestured to his enforcers. Without a word, the two men stepped forward, gripped Evelyn by her arms, and stripped her phone and coat away.

“Caleb! Please! What are you doing?!” Evelyn screamed, tears bursting from her eyes as she struggled against the iron grip of the men. “Let me go!”

Caleb stepped closer, pulling a small silver object from his pocket. He held it up in front of her face.

It was the black listening device he had taken from behind the portrait in his office three days ago.

Evelyn gasped, all the air rushing out of her lungs. Her eyes dilated with absolute terror. She stopped fighting the guards and slumped in their grip, her knees giving out beneath the heavy silk of her wedding dress.

“You thought I didn't know,” Caleb whispered, crouching down so he was at eye level with her tears. “You thought I was blind, Evelyn. I saw the video. I saw you put it behind my parents’ portrait. I listened to your messages to Vance.”

“Caleb... listen to me... please!” Evelyn sobbed hysterically, her body shaking wildly. “They have Sophie! Marcus Vance has Sophie! He was going to kill her! He sent me a video of her in a cage! I didn't have a choice! I swear to God I love you, Caleb! I love you, but she’s my little sister!”

“I know,” Caleb said quietly.

Evelyn froze, looking at him through a blur of tears. “What?”

“I know Vance has Sophie,” Caleb repeated softly. He reached out and gently wiped a tear from her cheek, his thumb dragging across her pale skin. “And I know you did it to save her.”

“Then... then why are you doing this?” she wept.

“Because you didn't trust me,” Caleb said, a cold edge returning to his tone. “You thought a street thug like Marcus Vance had more power over your life than I do. You tried to play both sides, Evelyn. And in my world, when you play both sides, you lose everything.”

Caleb stood up and signaled to the guards.

“Lock her in the basement holding cell,” Caleb ordered firmly. “Chain the door. No phone, no windows, no light until I return.”

“Caleb! No! Please!” Evelyn shrieked as the guards began dragging her down the hallway, her white lace wedding dress sweeping against the floor as she fought frantically. “Vance is going to kill Sophie! If the pier shipment is a trap, Vance will kill her! Caleb! CALEB!”

Her screams echoed down the long marble corridors of the estate until the heavy iron door of the basement slammed shut, cutting off the sound completely.

Caleb turned toward the main entrance. Jack Sullivan was waiting for him by the front door, wearing an armpit holster over a black tactical turtleneck and holding a high-caliber silenced pistol.

“The assault team is in position at the meatpacking plant,” Jack reported. “And Vance’s entire strike team just pulled up to Pier 42.”

Caleb pulled his coat on, his eyes burning with an ancient, unforgiving rage.

“Let’s go get my sister-in-law,” Caleb said. “And then we put Marcus Vance in the ground.”
