Chapter 10 - A House with Glowing Windows

Six months later.

The cold rain of Boston had given way to the brilliant, warm sunshine of late spring. The estate in Marblehead sat atop the green cliffs, surrounded by blooming roses, blue hydrangeas, and the sparkling blue waters of Massachusetts Bay.

On the grand lawn overlooking the ocean, a white tent had been set up for a wedding reception.

Music drifted through the warm afternoon air. Guests filled the decorated tables—business associate, shipping captains, local community leaders, and trusted friends.

Inside the estate house, eight-year-old Ellie Carter sat in the sunlit breakfast nook wearing a bright yellow bridesmaid dress. Her mother, Beth, stood nearby adjusting Ellie’s ribbon, smiling happily.

Ellie had a sketchbook open in front of her. She was finishing a new drawing with her crayons.

Caleb Mercer stepped into the kitchen, looking sharp and regal in a classic black tuxedo. He walked over to Ellie and knelt beside her chair.

“What are you drawing today, sweetheart?” Caleb asked gently.

Ellie slid the paper toward him.

It was a drawing of the Marblehead estate, surrounded by bright yellow windows and green trees. Outside stood four figures holding hands: a tall man in a dark suit, a smiling dark-haired woman in a glowing white dress, a younger woman with short hair, and a little girl holding a blue crayon.

Above them, in bright blue letters, Ellie had written: People who came home.

Caleb smiled—a genuine, warm smile that reached all the way to his eyes. He kissed the top of Ellie’s head. “It’s the best drawing you’ve ever made, Ellie.”

“Is it time?” Beth asked softy, smiling at Caleb.

“It’s time,” Caleb said.

Ten minutes later, the wedding march began to play over the ocean breeze.

Caleb stood at the altar on the lawn, with Jack Sullivan standing proudly beside him as his best man.

Down the white runner carpet walked Sophie Grant, dressed in a lovely blush-pink dress, looking healthy, vibrant, and full of life. She gave Caleb a bright, grateful smile as she took her place.

And then, the guests stood.

Evelyn appeared at the edge of the lawn, framed by the bright blue bay behind her.

She wore a breathtaking lace wedding dress that shimmered in the sunlight. Her dark hair fell in soft curls over her shoulders, and her smile was radiant, free of any fear or sorrow. Around her neck, she no longer wore the silver heart. Instead, she wore a simple, elegant diamond pendant that Caleb had given her—a symbol of a new beginning built on absolute trust.
