Chapter 9 - A New Beginning Under One Roof

Six months later, the moving truck idling in front of Gabriel’s suburban house was almost completely unloaded.
Boxes stamped KITCHEN, TOYS, and MASTER BEDROOM were stacked neatly in the spacious hallway. The house had undergone a subtle transformation over the past few months; colorful children’s drawings now adorned the refrigerator door, a plush sectional sofa replaced the formal, stiff furniture in the living room, and the entire place hummed with the vibrant, chaotic energy of a real family home.
Rachel stood in the doorway of the master bedroom, wiping a light film of dust off a bookshelf as Gabriel walked in carrying a large box of books.
“That’s the last of the study boxes,” Gabriel said, setting the cardboard down with a soft thud and wiping his forehead with the back of his arm. He walked up behind Rachel, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. “How does it feel to officially be a suburban homeowner again?”
Rachel leaned back against his chest, smiling as she looked out the large window overlooking the sunlit backyard, where Finn and Levi were currently chasing the family’s newly adopted golden retriever puppy across the lawn.
“It feels terrifying, wonderful, and completely right,” Rachel admitted, turning around in his embrace to wrap her arms around his neck.
“Good,” Gabriel murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with deep, burning affection. “Because there’s one more box I need to unpack.”
Rachel raised an eyebrow playfully. “Oh? What box is that?”
Gabriel stepped back slightly, reaching into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a small, velvet-covered square box, his hands trembling ever so slightly—not with the clinical precision of a surgeon, but with the raw, nervous vulnerability of a man asking for his entire future.
Rachel’s breath caught in her throat. The room around them seemed to fade away into absolute silence, save for the distant sound of their boys laughing in the yard.
Gabriel dropped slowly to one knee on the hardwood floor.
“Rachel Bennett,” Gabriel said, his voice thick with emotion as he opened the box to reveal a delicate platinum ring set with a brilliant, sparkling diamond. “Six years ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life by walking away from you out of fear. But fate gave us a second chance—a second chance at love, at family, and at a life we were always meant to share together.”
He looked up into her glistening eyes, a tear tracking down his cheek.
“I don’t want to just be the father of your children. I want to be your husband. For the rest of my days, through every storm and every joy. Will you marry me?”
Rachel felt a warm tear slip down her cheek, but her smile was the brightest thing in the room. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
“Yes, Gabriel,” she choked out, her voice trembling with overflowing joy. “Yes, a million times yes.”
Gabriel slid the ring onto her finger, standing up to pull her into a fierce, passionate embrace that lifted her off her feet.
From the open French doors leading to the backyard, two excited little voices shouted up toward the balcony:
“Did Mom say yes?!”

Gabriel and Rachel pulled back, laughing through their tears, looking down at their sons waving wildly from the grass below.
“She said yes!” Gabriel shouted back, wrapping his arm securely around Rachel’s waist as they looked down at their family, finally complete, healed, and whole.
