Chapter 10 - The Family Portrait

The autumn breeze rustled through the golden leaves of the maple tree in the front yard, scattering crisp red and yellow confetti across the driveway.
It was a crisp Saturday afternoon, exactly one year after Finn had been wheeled into the emergency department doors—a terrifying moment that had changed the trajectory of all their lives forever.
Today, the emergency room was the furthest thing from anyone’s mind.
In the backyard, fairy lights were strung across the wooden pergola, and long tables were covered in white linen cloths. Friends, family, and colleagues had gathered to celebrate an intimate backyard wedding—a celebration not just of two people uniting in marriage, but of a family reclaiming the years the past had stolen from them.
Rachel stood in front of the full-length mirror in the master suite, smoothing down her flowing ivory lace wedding dress. The veil rested softly over her dark curls, catching the afternoon sunlight streaming through the window.
The door clicked open, and two miniature versions of Gabriel walked in. Finn and Levi were dressed in matching miniature navy blue suits with tiny silver bowties, looking impossibly handsome and squirming with excitement.
“Mom! You look like a princess!” Finn gasped, his eyes going wide with awe.
“A superhero princess,” Levi corrected sagely, adjusting his bowtie with a serious expression.
Rachel knelt down, pulling both boys into her arms and burying her face in their hair, inhaling their sweet, familiar scent. “Thank you, my sweet boys. Are you ready for the big ceremony?”
“We have the rings!” Finn announced proudly, patting his jacket pocket where a velvet pouch was securely tucked.
Just then, the door opened wider, and Gabriel walked in.
He stopped dead in his tracks. Dressed in a sharp charcoal tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled and his eyes shining with unshed tears, he looked at Rachel as if she were the only person in the entire universe.
The boys scampered over to their dad, grabbing his trouser legs. “Dad, look how pretty Mom is!”
Gabriel smiled, walking slowly across the room until he stood right in front of Rachel. He reached out, gently lifting her veil and tucking it behind her ear, his fingers trembling slightly.
“I thought I knew what love was six years ago,” Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “And then you gave me these two incredible boys, and you gave me back my soul. You are my entire world, Rachel.”

“And you are mine, Gabriel,” Rachel smiled, her heart swelling with a profound, unbreakable peace.
Hand in hand, with their two boys walking proudly ahead of them scattering white rose petals along the green lawn, Rachel and Gabriel stepped out into the golden autumn sunlight toward the altar—ready to embrace a future where every storm had passed, and every tomorrow belonged to them.
