Chapter 8 - Confrontation in the Dark

"State Police! Drop your weapons! Hands in the air!"
Bright, blinding tactical spotlights cut through the darkness of the warehouse, illuminating the dust particles in the air. Agent Reyes and Chen rushed inside, sidearms raised, flanked by four tactical troopers in heavy body armor.
Vance acted instantly. With a roar of fury, he drew his service weapon and fired two shots toward the spotlight beams. Sparks erupted as a light shattered, plunging the room into chaotic, strobing flashes of darkness and red tactical lasers.
"Cover!" Reyes shouted, diving behind a row of wooden pallets as concrete dust sprayed into the air from Vance’s gunfire.
Crowe shrieked in terror, grabbing the duffel bag full of pills and lunging toward the side service corridor—the precise escape route leading toward the drainage tunnel.
From her vantage point on the catwalk, Sadie saw Crowe sprinting directly toward the unlit catwalk stairs.
"He's heading for the drainage tunnel!" Sadie yelled from above, her voice ringing out over the sound of shouting officers.
Vance spun around at the sound of her voice, his face twisted in disbelief and rage as he looked up into the catwalk rafters. "You!"
Vance raised his gun toward Sadie’s position.
"Vance, down!" Agent Chen screamed, tackling the corrupt detective from the side before he could squeeze the trigger. The gun flew from Vance’s hand, clattering across the concrete floor. Vance hit the ground hard, but fought back violently, throwing punches as Chen struggled to pin his arms behind his back.
Meanwhile, Crowe had reached the base of the catwalk stairs, panicking as he realized the lower service exit was blocked by State Police troopers advancing from the rear entrance.
Trapped, Crowe turned around, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He grabbed a heavy metal crowbar from a maintenance workbench and swung it wildly at the nearest officer, striking a trooper's shoulder shield.
Sadie ran along the overhead catwalk toward the stairs. She grabbed a heavy, rusted brass fire extinguisher mounted to the iron railing.
"Mr. Crowe!" Sadie screamed from above.
Crowe looked up just as Sadie tipped the forty-pound extinguisher over the handrail.
The heavy cylinder fell ten feet, striking the crowbar in Crowe’s hands with a deafening CLANG. The force of the impact snapped the crowbar from his grip and sent him stumbling backward onto the slick, wet floor.
Before he could scramble back to his feet, Agent Reyes slammed him down against the concrete, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Martin Crowe, you are under arrest for the illegal manufacture and distribution of controlled substances, extortion, and attempted murder," Reyes declared, her voice firm and unshakable.
Across the room, Agent Chen pulled a defeated, bleeding Marcus Vance to his feet, snapping cuffs onto his wrists as well.
Vance glared at Sadie, who was descending the catwalk stairs, her breathing ragged, her jacket soaked with rain.
"You ruined everything, you little parasite," Vance spat, his voice choked with venom.

Sadie walked right up to him, looking him dead in the eye without a single trace of fear remaining in her heart.
"No," Sadie said calmly. "You ruined yourself. I just recorded it."
