Chapter 6 - Betrayal at the Gate

The tranquility of the estate shattered in an instant. Alarm sirens began to wail, casting rhythmic red pulses of light down the grand hallways. Outside, the sound of heavy gunfire tore through the quiet night air.

Julian was on his feet instantly, pulling a sleek black handgun from his shoulder holster with practiced ease. His entire posture shifted from tired father to lethal commander.

"Roman! Get the secondary team to the perimeter!" Julian commanded into his comm-link. He turned to Sarah, his face hard. "Take Mia to the safe room beneath the wine cellar. Now. Do not come out until I come for you."

"Julian, be careful," Sarah said, her heart hammering against her ribs.

He paused, looking at her for a brief second, his hand resting gently against her cheek—a touch so warm and unexpected it sent a jolt through her. "I will. Go!"

Sarah didn't waste a second. She rushed into Mia's bedroom, scooped the sleepy, frightened child into her arms, and sprinted down the private service stairwell toward the basement levels. The sound of explosions rattled the stone foundation of the manor.

Reaching the deep wine cellar, Sarah approached the hidden steel door concealed behind a massive oak cask. She entered the security code Julian had taught her days earlier. The heavy door clicked open with a deep pneumatic hiss, revealing a fortified bunker equipped with communications, food, and medical supplies.

Sarah ushered Mia inside. "Stay in the back corner, sweetie. Cover your ears like you did at the warehouse, okay?"

Mia nodded bravely, clutching her favorite stuffed bear.

Sarah was about to seal the heavy steel door from the inside when a shadow stepped into the doorway of the wine cellar.

Sarah grabbed a heavy iron bottle rack, raising it as a weapon. "Stay back!"

The figure stepped into the light. It wasn't one of Moretti's men. It was Marcus—the gravel-voiced lieutenant who had been at the harbor warehouse weeks ago. But he wasn't wearing handcuffs or tactical gear. He was holding a silenced pistol, a cruel smirk plastered across his face.

"Well, well," Marcus sneered. "The hero cleaner. Did you really think Victor and I were acting alone at the harbor? Victor was just the fall guy. I'm the one who fed Moretti the security codes tonight."

Sarah felt a cold dread wash over her. Marcus was the insider. He was the traitor in Julian's inner circle.

"Julian knows," Sarah bluffed, standing firmly between Marcus and the open safe room door. "His men are closing in on you right now."

"Julian is currently busy dealing with twenty armed mercs at the front gate," Marcus laughed softly, raising his gun. "By the time he realizes I'm down here, I'll have the girl, and you'll be a memory. Step aside, nurse."

Sarah looked at the gun pointed at her chest. She had no weapon, no tactical training, and no chance of overpowering a seasoned mercenary in a direct fight.

"No," Sarah said, her voice echoed with absolute steel.

"Then die," Marcus said, his finger tightening on the trigger.
