Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Two years later.
The gardens of the Vance estate were transformed into a paradise of white orchids, blooming roses, and golden sunlight. Soft string quartet music drifted through the air as friends, colleagues, reformed business partners, and hospital staff gathered under the grand canopy.
At the front of the altar stood Julian Vance, looking striking in a navy tuxedo. Beside him stood Roman, dressed in a fine suit, serving proudly as the best man.
The music shifted to a gentle, triumphant march.
First came Mia, now eight years old, glowing with health and happiness. She walked down the aisle as the maid of honor, scattering pink rose petals with a huge, radiant smile.
Then, walking gracefully down the white runner, came Sarah. She was breathtaking in an off-the-shoulder lace wedding gown that swept the ground, holding a bouquet of white roses and yellow freesia. Her skin glowed in the afternoon sun, her posture regal, proud, and undeniably beautiful.
When Julian looked at her, his eyes shone with uncharacteristic tears. When she reached the altar, he took her hands, leaning in to whisper, "You take my breath away."
"You look pretty good yourself, Mr. Vance," Sarah whispered back with a winking smile.
The minister spoke words of union, love, and second chances—of how two people from completely different worlds had been brought together by an act of selfless courage.
"Do you, Julian Vance, take Sarah Williams to be your wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, till death do you part?"
"I do," Julian said, his voice echoing with absolute certainty.
"And do you, Sarah Williams, take Julian Vance to be your wedded husband, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, till death do you part?"
"I do," Sarah said softly, her eyes locked on his.
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!"
Julian gathered Sarah into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her passion and devotion, while the entire garden erupted into cheers and applause. Mia cheered the loudest, jumping up and down and clapping her hands.
Later that evening, as the sun set over the bay, throwing long streaks of pink and purple across the sky, the three of them stood together at the edge of the estate garden overlooking the sea.
Mia stood between them, holding Sarah’s left hand and Julian’s right hand, swinging her feet happily as they walked toward the overlook.
"Sarah?" Mia asked, looking up.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Can I call you Mom now?"
Sarah stopped, dropping to her knees so she was eye-level with the little girl. She smoothed Mia’s dark hair behind her ear, her heart overflowing with a warmth so deep it brought sweet tears to her eyes.
"I would be honored, Mia," Sarah said softly. "I love you so much."
"I love you too, Mom," Mia smiled, throwing her tiny arms around Sarah's neck.

Julian knelt down beside them, wrapping his powerful arms around both of his girls, pulling them close against his heart.
The dark nights at the harbor, the cold steel bars, and the fear were long gone, replaced forever by a home filled with laughter, security, and an enduring love that had changed everything.
