Chapter 4 - The Legal Battleground

Two weeks passed. Maya’s physical health improved dramatically under the care of the best specialists money could buy. Damon visited her every single day, bringing books, toys, and a brand-new wardrobe. He noticed that while she loved the new things, she never let Barnaby, the one-eyed teddy bear, out of her sight.

However, the world of a billionaire is never private for long. Despite Damon’s best efforts, a rogue hospital employee leaked a photo of Damon Aosta entering the private pediatric wing. Within twenty-four hours, the media was in a frenzy. Headlines screamed: “The Ruthless Tycoon’s Secret Child?” and “Damon Aosta Harbors Mysterious Girl.”

Worse than the media attention was the arrival of Child Protective Services.

Damon was in his office at the Aosta Meridian Group penthouse when his secretary announced that a social worker and a legal representative from the city were waiting in the lobby.

"Bring them in," Damon said, his eyes narrowing as he adjusted his cuffs.

A stern-looking woman in a gray suit stepped in, introduced as Ms. Henderson, alongside a city attorney. "Mr. Aosta," Ms. Henderson began, sitting across from his massive mahogany desk. "We appreciate your charitable contribution to this child’s medical care. However, taking a ward of the state into a private facility without notifying the proper authorities is a serious legal violation. Maya Linwood must be placed into a state-run foster care facility immediately while we assess her case."

The word foster care triggered a visceral reaction in Damon. He remembered the cold, overcrowded group homes, the indifferent caretakers, the feeling of being a piece of luggage moved from house to house.

"She is not going into the system," Damon said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register.

"Mr. Aosta, you do not have legal custody," the attorney countered. "You cannot simply adopt a child from the street because you are wealthy. There are procedures, background checks, and a long waiting list of certified families. Furthermore, your lifestyle—a bachelor billionaire running an international conglomerate—is hardly considered an ideal environment for a traumatized child."

Damon leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the desk. The sheer aura of power he radiated made the attorney take a step back.

"Listen to me very carefully," Damon said softly, each word cutting like a blade. "Maya Linwood survived a tragedy that would have broken adults. She spent six weeks in freezing conditions while this city’s social services failed to even notice she was missing. I found her. I am providing for her. My legal team consists of thirty of the sharpest minds in this country. By the end of this afternoon, I will have temporary guardianship papers signed by a federal judge. If you attempt to remove her from that hospital and place her in a state facility, I will tie this city up in litigation so severe that your department will lose its funding before the week is out."

Ms. Henderson stared at him, realizing she wasn't dealing with a celebrity looking for a publicity stunt. She was dealing with a predator protecting his cub.

"Mr. Aosta," she said, her tone softening slightly. "Even if you secure temporary guardianship, a permanent adoption requires a homestudy. It requires proof that you can provide a stable, loving, and present family environment. Can you truly give her that? Or will she just be raised by nannies in a gold cage?"

The question struck a chord in Damon's conscience. He knew he worked eighty hours a week. He knew his penthouse was cold and minimalist.

"I will give her whatever she needs," Damon stated firmly. "But she stays with me."

After a tense standoff, the legal team managed to secure the temporary custody papers. But Damon knew this was only the first battle. To win the right to be Maya's father, he was going to have to change not just his schedule, but the very fabric of his life.
