Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Past

The private wing of St. Jude’s Hospital was silent and pristine. Dr. Evans, a veteran physician who had treated the Aosta family for decades, stood by the bed where Maya lay sleeping. She was hooked up to an IV drip, delivering fluids and nutrients to her severely malnourished body. They had carefully washed the dirt from her skin, revealing pale, delicate features, though the bruises on her shins and arms spoke of a harsh life on the streets.

"She's severely dehydrated, malnourished, and suffering from early-stage hypothermia," Dr. Evans said, closing her chart. "But she’s resilient, Damon. No broken bones, no serious infections. She needs rest, proper food, and time."

"And the teddy bear?" Damon asked, pointing to the bedside table where the scorched toy sat, clean but still battle-worn.

"She wouldn't let the nurses take it until she fell asleep," Dr. Evans smiled gently. "We cleaned it up as best we could without ruining it. It seems to be her anchor."

Damon nodded, sitting in a chair beside the bed. He had washed his hands, but his clothes were still damp and stained from the alley. He didn't care.

"Thank you, David. Keep this off the records. If anyone asks, she is a relative of mine."

Dr. Evans looked at the billionaire, a man he had known since childhood. "Damon... you've never been one for random acts of charity. What's going on?"

Damon stared at Maya's small hand, which was resting on the white hospital sheets. "I saw myself, David. Thirty years ago, before your father found me. I know what that alley feels like."

The doctor silenced himself, understanding the profound weight of those words. Damon Aosta was not born into wealth. He was an orphan, a boy who had survived the foster system and the streets before a wealthy benefactor saw his brilliant mind and adopted him. The world thought Damon was ruthless because he loved money; the truth was, Damon was ruthless because he remembered what it was like to have absolutely nothing.

Dr. Evans patted Damon’s shoulder and quietly left the room.

A few hours later, as the dawn light began to bleed through the window blinds, Maya stirred. Her eyes fluttered open, panic instantly gripping her features as she realized she was in an unfamiliar place. She sat up quickly, pulling at the IV line.

"Hey, hey, easy," Damon said softly, moving to the side of the bed. "You're safe. You're in a hospital. The doctors are helping you."

Maya froze, her eyes landing on him. She recognized him. Her gaze darted to the bedside table, and she grabbed the teddy bear, hugging it to her chest like a shield.

"Where is my mom?" she whispered, her voice cracking.

Damon felt a knot tighten in his throat. He had ordered his security team to run a quiet investigation the moment they arrived at the hospital, using her first name and the location where she was found. He had received the preliminary file just an hour ago.

"Maya," Damon said, sitting on the edge of the mattress, keeping his distance so she wouldn't feel cornered. "Can you tell me what happened to your mom?"

Tears finally welled up in the little girl's amber eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks. "There was a big fire," she sobbed, her small shoulders shaking. "At our apartment. The loud trucks came. Mommy put me out the window onto the metal stairs and told me to run and hold Barnaby." She looked down at the scorched teddy bear. "She said she was right behind me. But the fire got too big. The building fell down."

Damon's heart shattered. The file his team sent had mentioned an apartment building fire six weeks ago in the lower district. A young, single mother named Sarah Linwood had perished in the blaze. Her daughter, Maya, had been presumed dead or lost in the chaos. With no other living relatives, no one had been looking for her. She had been living on the streets, surviving on scraps, waiting for a mother who was never coming back.

"I waited by the building," Maya wept, her little fingers digging into the plush fabric of the bear. "But the police men told me to go away. I wanted to go home, but there is no home."

Damon closed the distance between them, unable to watch her suffer alone. He reached out, and this time, Maya didn't pull away. She threw her small arms around his neck, burying her face into his shirt, sobbing violently for the loss of her mother, her home, and her safety.

Damon held her tightly, rocking her back and forth. As he did, he made a silent vow. He had the power to change destinies, to buy companies and build empires. But looking at this broken child, he knew that his greatest challenge, and his truest purpose, had just begun.
