Chapter 9 - The Path to Healing

Two years passed.

Our lives bloomed into something extraordinary. I went back to school and completed my master's degree in child psychology, taking my own traumatic experience and turning it into a passion to help other mothers and children navigating family trauma.

I bought a beautiful four-bedroom bungalow with a sprawling backyard, funded by my new career and a successful civil lawsuit judgment against Dorothy's remaining estate.

Brody was now nine years old—thriving, confident, and playing little league baseball. He no longer needed a star nightlight to fall asleep. His smile was wide, bright, and completely free of fear.

Skylar, now twelve, had her photography featured in a regional youth art exhibition. Her winning photograph was a breathtaking shot of sunrise over the lake—the very lake where the nightmare had begun—capturing light breaking through dark storm clouds. She titled it: Unbroken.

One evening, as the autumn sunset painted the sky in shades of gold and violet, my sister and I sat on the back patio while the kids played tag with our newly adopted golden retriever puppy, Barnaby.

"You built all of this, Jenna," my sister said, clinking her glass against mine. "Out of total destruction, you built a kingdom."

I looked down at my hands. They used to shake every time the phone rang or every time someone raised their voice. Now, they were steady, strong, and calm.

"I didn't do it alone," I smiled, watching Skylar laugh as Barnaby stole her sneaker. "My kids saved me as much as I saved them."
