Chapter 8 - Severing the Strings

A year after the trial, the divorce was finalized.
Philip signed away all legal custody rights, agreeing to a strictly supervised visitation schedule—two hours every second Sunday at a court-mandated family center.
The first visitation took place on a rainy afternoon in September. I dropped Skylar and Brody off with the court supervisor. Philip was waiting inside the small room filled with toys and books.
He looked years older. His hair was thinning, his shoulders slouched.
When Brody walked into the room, Philip dropped to his knees, tears brimming in his eyes. "Brody... Skylar... I missed you guys so much."
Brody held onto the supervisor's hand, looking cautious. "Hi, Dad."
Skylar stood tall, her camera bag slung over her shoulder. She looked at her father not with hatred, but with a quiet, solemn pity.
"Philip," I said standing by the doorway before leaving them for their hour. "They are here because they deserve to know you are safe now. But you need to earn their trust back. Step by step."
"I know, Jenna," Philip whispered, looking up at me with profound shame. "I spent my life letting my mother control my mind. I lost the only things that ever mattered to me. I'm... I'm going to therapy every week now. I'm trying to fix what I broke."

"I hope you do, Philip," I said sincerely. "For your sake, and for theirs."
Leaving that room, I realized I no longer held any anger toward Philip. The rage that had sustained me through the investigation and trial had finally dissolved, replaced by a deep, beautiful peace. He was a cautionary tale of a man who never learned to stand on his own feet. But I had claimed my life back.
