Chapter 9 - Rebuilding on New Terms

Six months passed.

The transition at Marcus Vance Enterprises was swift and efficient. Under Apex Holdings' management, unnecessary overhead was slashed, inflated executive salaries were adjusted to realistic levels, and the newly expanded location was turned into a profitable service hub.

Marcus remained as operational manager. Stripped of the burden of looming debt and the need to maintain a fake persona of immense wealth, he actually became better at his job. He focused on auto repair—which he was genuinely good at—rather than corporate posturing.

The change in him was gradual, but real. Humiliation had broken his ego, but accountability was slowly making him a better man.

One Saturday afternoon in late autumn, my phone rang. It was Marcus.

"Hey, Eleanor," he said quietly. His voice no longer carried the boisterous, performative edge it once had.

"Hello, Marcus. Is there an issue with the third quarter reports?"

"No," he said. "The reports are fine. Operations are running smoothly." He paused for a long moment. "I was actually calling to ask... if you and Daniel are free tomorrow?"

"Why?"

"I'm having a small cookout at my house. Just Mom, Dad, and my boys. No big crowd. No social media stuff." Marcus swallowed hard over the phone. "I... I wanted to cook a burger for Daniel. If he'll have one."

I looked out the window of my new house—a warm, beautiful four-bedroom home sitting on a quiet, tree-lined street that I had purchased without taking out a single loan. Daniel was in the backyard, playing fetch with our new golden retriever.

"I'll ask him, Marcus," I said.

That evening, I sat on the edge of Daniel’s bed. "Uncle Marcus invited us to a barbecue tomorrow. He asked specifically if you would come."

Daniel looked up from his reading book. He thought about it for a few moments, his small face thoughtful.

"Is he going to be mean again?" Daniel asked softly.

"No, honey," I said, brushing his hair back. "He won't be mean again. Uncle Marcus learned an important lesson."

May you like

Daniel smiled faintly. "Okay. As long as we can get ice cream after."

"Deal," I laughed.
