Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The living room exploded into chaos.

"What do you mean calling the loan?!" Aunt Patricia gasped, dropping her tea napkin. "Can they do that?"

"They claim I breached the liquidity covenant," Marcus said, his voice rising in pitch. He began pacing the carpet. "It’s a predatory move! Some corporate holding company bought the debt and they're trying to squeeze me out! They want to force a foreclosure on the new location!"

Uncle Robert stood up, his smug expression instantly vanishing. "Marcus, how much cash do you have on hand? Can you refinance through another lender?"

"No!" Marcus practically shouted, wiping sweat from his forehead. "My credit lines are maxed out from the equipment purchases! I put up the original two shops as cross-collateral! If they foreclose on the new location, the entire business entity goes into receivership!"

Mom looked terrified. "Marcus... what about your home? Your savings?"

"Everything is tied up!" Jennifer cried, starting to tear up. "We just put a down payment on the beach house last month!"

The entire family—the people who had sat silently while my son was humiliated over a piece of meat—were now in a full-blown panic. The illusion of Marcus’s grand success was crumbling in real time, exposing the fragile mountain of debt it was built upon.

"Robert," Marcus said desperately, turning to our uncle. "You said your accountant was working on wealth-building strategies. Can you lend me two hundred thousand to satisfy the liquidity requirement?"

Uncle Robert suddenly looked very interested in his scotch. He took a slow step backward. "Well, Marcus... my capital is currently tied up in non-liquid assets. It would take months to liquidate..."

"Patricia?" Marcus begged.

Aunt Patricia pulled her purse closer to her side. "Marcus, dear, you know we live on a fixed dividend income. We can't risk that kind of capital on a commercial rescue."

The very relatives who had praised Marcus's "entrepreneurial mindset" two weeks ago instantly withdrew when real sacrifice was required.

"There must be someone behind this Apex Holdings," Mom said, wringing her hands. "Can't you talk to their legal team? Ask for an extension?"

"I tried!" Marcus yelled, his composure completely shattered. "Their legal counsel won't even put me on the phone with the principal! They just keep saying: 'The managing partner acts strictly according to contract parameters!'"

I sat silently in my chair, taking a slow sip of my water. Daniel looked up from his drawing, glanced at Marcus, and then looked back at me. He didn't say a word, but he reached over and held my hand.
