Chapter 8 - The Proposal Beneath the Stars

The evening sky over Connecticut was clear, studded with a million brilliant stars that glittered like diamonds against the velvet blackness.

Out on the expansive stone terrace where the engagement party had turned into a battlefield just nights before, a small, intimate dinner table had been set up. Candles flickered inside glass lanterns, casting a soft, golden glow across the white tablecloth.

Inside the mansion, Lily had finally fallen fast asleep in her new nursery, exhausted from a day filled with new toys, strawberry pancakes, and endless games of hide-and-seek with her father.

Elena sat across from Nathaniel at the terrace table, a glass of sparkling cider in her hand. They had spent the last hour talking about everything and nothing—sharing childhood stories, laughing at funny memories, and shedding the invisible walls that had separated their worlds for so long.

“I still can’t believe you actually learned how to bake animal crackers,” Elena teased, taking a sip of her drink with a bright smile.

Nathaniel chuckled, leaning back in his chair with a relaxed posture. “Necessity is the mother of invention, Elena. When your daughter refuses to go to sleep without a specific brand of snack, you adapt or you perish.”

“Is that what a billionaire CEO tells his board of directors?”

“Usually, yes,” Nathaniel grinned, his eyes sparkling in the candlelight. Then, his expression slowly shifted, turning softer, more serious. He reached across the table and placed his hand over hers.

The laughter faded into a comfortable, charged silence.

“Elena,” Nathaniel began, his voice steady and deeply resonant. “For the last six years, I lived in a shadow. I thought my story was over. I thought my heart had been buried in the past.”

He stood up from his chair, walked around the table, and knelt down on one knee right beside her.

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart raced wildly against her ribs.

“You walked into my life carrying a little girl with big brown eyes and a laugh that brought my home back to life,” Nathaniel said, pulling a small, velvet box from his jacket pocket. “You protected her, you raised her with love and grace, and you showed me what it truly means to care for someone without expecting anything in return.”

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a stunning, vintage diamond ring that caught the starlight like a captured galaxy.

“I don’t want a business arrangement, Elena,” Nathaniel whispered, looking up into her eyes with raw, absolute devotion. “I don’t want a society marriage built on contracts and lies. I want a real family. I want you, and I want Lily, by my side for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?”

Tears spilled freely down Elena’s cheeks, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated joy. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes,” Elena choked out, a radiant smile breaking through her tears. “Yes, Nathaniel, I will.”

Nathaniel slid the ring onto her finger, standing up to pull her into his arms. He lifted her off her feet in a joyful spin, and when he set her back down, he kissed her—a deep, tender, passionate kiss that sealed their past, their present, and their entire future together.

Far away from the gossip of high society, beneath the starlit sky of the Whitfield estate, the broken pieces of their lives had finally come together to form something unbreakable.
