Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Elite

The revelation hit the ballroom like a seismic shockwave.

Cameras flashed from invisible corners—though none of the reporters dared publish without Nathaniel’s explicit permission—and the socialites who had spent the evening sneering at Elena and Lily now looked as though they wanted the marble floor to open up and swallow them whole.

Victoria Hail staggered backward, her emerald silk gown rustling frantically as she collided with a marble pillar. Her immaculate composure was completely gone. Her mascara was slightly smudged, her chest heaving as she pointed a trembling, manicured finger at Elena and the little girl.

“This is a conspiracy!” Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing desperately off the high ceilings. “You’re trading me—your equal, your fiancée—for a common maid and a bastard brat? Nathaniel, you can’t do this! My family name! Our contract! Our social standing!”

Nathaniel slowly turned to face her, his expression devoid of any human warmth. The man who had once tolerated her presence for the sake of corporate optics was entirely gone, replaced by the ruthless patriarch protecting his bloodline.

“Contract?” Nathaniel’s voice cut through her hysteria like a sheet of glass. “You mean the merger agreement your family drafted to bail out your father’s failing real estate empire? The one where you agreed to marry me in exchange for fifty million dollars in capital injection and lifetime shares?”

Victoria froze, her breath catching in her throat.

“I knew about your family’s financial ruin from day one, Victoria,” Nathaniel continued, stepping closer to her until she was trapped against the pillar. “I let you play your little games because I had other priorities. I was searching for my lost child. I didn't care about your social ambitions. But you crossed a line tonight.”

“I—I only defended your standards!” Victoria stammered, her voice losing its edge, replaced by raw terror. “I didn't know she was your daughter! How was I supposed to know a billionaire’s child was dressed as a maid?”

“By treating human beings with basic decency,” Nathaniel replied coldly. “A lesson you were clearly never taught.”

He raised his hand and signaled toward the grand doors.

Four federal agents in dark suits strode into the ballroom, stepping past the frozen guests. They walked directly toward Richard Sterling and a pale-faced man standing near the bar—Victoria’s father, Senator Arthur Hail, who had tried to quietly slip out through the service exit.

“Senator Arthur Hail and Richard Sterling,” the lead agent announced loudly, flashing a federal badge. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, conspiracy, and tampering with evidence relating to the 2020 highway incident.”

Chaos erupted. Screams of protest and shock filled the air as the agents snapped handcuffs onto Richard Sterling and Senator Hail, dragging them away in full view of three hundred elite witnesses. Their reputations, built on decades of political and financial corruption, were obliterated in seconds.

Victoria watched her father and her allies get hauled away, her legs finally giving out beneath her. She sank to the floor in a crumpled heap of emerald silk, sobbing hysterically as the reality of her total ruin washed over her.

Nobody stepped forward to help her. In high society, loyalty was currency, and right now, Victoria Hail was utterly bankrupt.

Nathaniel turned his back on her entirely. He walked back to where Elena was still kneeling on the floor, holding Lily close.

The little girl was still sniffling, clutching the torn threads of her blanket.

Nathaniel knelt down once more, ignoring the dust on his trousers. He looked at Elena, his gray eyes softening into something so profound, so full of warmth and reverence, that it took her breath away.

“Elena,” Nathaniel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “For two years, you took care of my home. You took care of my heart without even knowing it. Can you ever forgive me for not finding out sooner?”

Elena looked down at him, her heart pounding against her ribs. The barrier between their worlds had vanished, burned away by truth and fire.

She slowly shook her head, a soft, trembling smile breaking through her tears.

“You found us, Mr. Nate,” Elena whispered back. “That’s all that matters.”
