Chapter 8 - The Breaking Point

Ben slowly pulled his phone from his pocket. It wasn't just in his pocket—he had been on a active call with the local police department’s dispatch the entire time.

"They heard everything, Mom," Ben said, tears streaming down his face. "They're on their way."

Margaret looked at her youngest son, her eyes wide with shock and betrayal. "Ben... how could you? I am your mother!"

"You tried to kill my nephew, Mom," Ben said, his voice breaking. "You tried to kill Ethan. He is twelve years old. If he had eaten that steak... I can't even say it. You're not a mother. You're a monster."

Within ten minutes, the sound of sirens echoed down the quiet suburban street. Two police cruisers pulled into the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the morning sky.

They entered the house, and Ben handed them the digital recorder, the toxicology report, and the silver tablet crusher.

Margaret did not fight. As the officers placed the handcuffs on her wrists, she seemed to shrink, aging ten years in a matter of seconds. The proud, arrogant matriarch was gone, replaced by a frail, defeated old woman.

She didn't look at me or Ben as they led her out the front door.

Once the police cars drove away, the house fell into a profound, exhausted silence.

Ben sank onto the sofa, burying his face in his hands. I walked over and sat next to him, putting my arm around his shoulders. We didn't say anything. There was nothing left to say. The family we had known was gone, but the truth had finally set us free.

Claire walked over and joined us, sitting on my other side, her hand finding mine.

"It's over," she whispered. "We're safe."
