Chapter 10 - A True Thanksgiving

A year had passed.
The air was crisp, and the trees in our backyard were painted in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and crimson. It was Thanksgiving once again.
This year, there was no tension in our house. The kitchen was filled with the warm, rich aromas of roasted turkey, fresh cranberry sauce, and homemade pumpkin pie.
I stood by the window, watching Ethan and his cousin Tyler playing touch football in the backyard. They were laughing, their breath forming small clouds in the chilly November air.
Claire came up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist and leaning her head against my shoulder.
"Smells good, doesn't it?" she asked softly.
I turned around and smiled, kissing her forehead. "It smells perfect."
The front door opened, and Ben walked in, carrying a large bowl of homemade stuffing.
"Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!" he called out, his face bright and relaxed.
"Happy Thanksgiving, Ben!" Claire replied, walking over to give him a warm hug.
We gathered around the dining room table. There was no seating arrangement chart, no strict dress code, and certainly no criticism. Ethan sat next to his cousin, wearing his favorite sneakers, a bright smile on his face.
Before we began to eat, I raised my glass.
"I want to make a toast," I said, looking around the table at the people I loved most. "To truth, to healing, and to family. The real kind. The kind that protects each other, loves each other unconditionally, and makes us feel safe. Happy Thanksgiving."
"Happy Thanksgiving," everyone echoed, their glasses clinking together in a warm, harmonious chorus.

Ethan reached for a slice of turkey, then looked at his plate and smiled. "Hey Dad, this smells absolutely amazing."
"I know, buddy," I said, smiling back at him, my heart full of peace. "Go ahead and eat. You're safe."
