Chapter 10 - The New Year's Table

On New Year's Eve, exactly three years after the night that changed everything, my home was filled with light, music, and the delicious aroma of roasted turkey and fresh cinnamon apples.

The dining room table was set for twelve.

Around the table sat Lily, now twelve years old, her smile bright and confident; Noah, now ten, proudly showing off his new soccer trophy; and a dozen friends from our community foundation.

Beside them sat Mason. He had grown into a polite, thoughtful young man. An hour earlier, he had pulled Lily and Noah aside in the living room, holding out two handwritten notes. With genuine tears in his eyes, he had apologized for his cruel words years ago, asking if they could start over as real cousins. Lily had looked at him, smiled warmly, and offered him a hug that instantly dissolved three years of tension.

Dana sat at the edge of the table, quietly helping pass dishes, her face filled with a peaceful humbleness.

My mother had declined the invitation to join, choosing instead to stay in her quiet house, but she had sent a card with a short note written inside: Claire, thank you for teaching our family what Arthur tried to show us all along.

As the grandfather clock in the hallway began to chime, announcing the approach of midnight, everyone gathered around the center island with glasses of sparkling apple cider.

I raised my glass, looking around at the bright, smiling faces of the people in my home—family by blood, family by choice, and friends brought together by purpose.

"To Grandpa Arthur," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the room. "Who taught us that a family isn't defined by the blood in our veins, but by the love in our hearts and the seats we make at our table."

"To Grandpa Arthur!" everyone echoed in unison, their glasses clinking together in joyful celebration.

Lily reached over and squeezed my hand, her eyes shining under the warm chandelier light. "Happy New Year, Mom."

"Happy New Year, my beautiful girl," I smiled, wrapping my arm around her and pulling Noah close to my side.

Outside the window, fireworks illuminated the night sky in bursts of brilliant gold, crimson, and white, clearing away the darkness of the past and lighting up a future filled with endless hope, unconditional love, and a legacy that would never be broken.
