Chapter 6 - The Uncomfortable TruthVanessa lowered her head, fresh tears spilling down her pale cheeks. "I... I was arrogant," she sobbed softly. "I grew up thinking that people who didn't dress like us or live in our neighborhood didn't matter. I thought... I thought status was everything."

"You didn't just think status was everything, Vanessa," I said, my voice firm and unwavering. "You enjoyed cruelty. You took pleasure in humiliating someone you thought had no power to fight back. You laughed. Your mother laughed. Your friends laughed."

"I was stupid!" Vanessa wailed, clutching her handkerchief. "I lost Ethan! I lost the man I love! Isn't that punishment enough?"

"You didn't love Ethan," I countered directly. "If you loved Ethan, you would have treated every person in his life—and every person on this earth—with basic human dignity, because you would know that Ethan is a man of integrity who values kindness above all else. You loved what Ethan represented: security, wealth, and prestige."

George Mitchell reached out and placed a trembling hand on my desk. "Mrs. Carter, please. Vanessa made a terrible mistake. She is young. Don't destroy my company, my employees, and my family’s future because of a young girl’s foolishness. I will do anything. Anything you ask."

"Anything?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yes! Name your terms!" George pleaded. "Public apology, community service, financial restitution—anything! Just please don't pull the plug on Mitchell Development."

I looked at the two of them for a long moment. The silence in the office was deafening.

I knew I had the power to crush them completely. With a single phone call, I could wipe out George’s company, buy their home at an auction, and ensure that neither of them ever worked in high finance or real estate again.

But as I sat there looking at them—broken, terrified, and stripped of all their pretenses—I remembered where I came from.

Thirty years ago, when I was struggling to feed Ethan after my husband passed away, I had been looked down upon by people like the Mitchells. I had been treated like dirt by landlords, bank managers, and employers. I had sworn to myself back then that if I ever gained power, I would never use it merely to destroy people for vengeance. I would use it to teach, to build, and to demand justice.

"Here are my terms," I said, my voice dropping into a firm, command tone.

George and Vanessa leaned in, holding their breath.

"First," I said, "George, you will step down as CEO of Mitchell Development Corp. You will transfer fifty-one percent of the voting shares of the company to an independent trust managed by Vance Capital. The company will be restructured, and all low-income housing projects you previously canceled to build luxury condos will be reinstated immediately."

George flinched, but he nodded slowly. "I... I agree."

"Second," I looked straight at Vanessa. "Vanessa, you will complete five hundred hours of mandatory community service at the Nashville City Homeless Shelter. Not as a photo opportunity. Not with cameras. You will work in the kitchen, serving food and washing dishes, four days a week until every hour is complete."

Vanessa looked up, her eyes wide with shock, but she didn't argue. "I... I will do it."

"And third," I added, "you will issue a public, video-recorded statement taking full responsibility for your actions, without making excuses, without blaming stress, and without mentioning my financial standing. You will apologize to the public, to Ethan, and most importantly, to Marcus, the young man whose job you threatened."

Vanessa swallowed hard, wiped her face, and nodded. "Okay. I will do it. I swear I will."

"If you fulfill these conditions," I concluded, "Vance Capital will restructure your debt and keep the company from bankruptcy. If you fail even one of these terms, I will proceed with full liquidation within twenty-four hours. Do we have an agreement?"

George grabbed my hand and shook it frantically. "Yes, Mrs. Carter! Yes! Thank you! Thank you for your mercy!"
