Chapter 5 - The Financial CollapseOver the next forty-eight hours, the world of the Mitchell family crumbled with terrifying speed.

On Monday morning, George Mitchell walked into his downtown corporate offices to find three senior forensic accountants from Vance Capital sitting in his conference room, backed by a team of corporate lawyers.

By noon, the news broke that Vance Capital had officially defaulted Mitchell Development Corp for breach of contract and ethical code violations outlined in their funding agreement. Without the forty-million-dollar line of credit from my company, George’s firm could not pay its contractors, its payroll, or the heavy interest on its existing debts.

By Tuesday afternoon, three major commercial real estate projects that George was developing collapsed. Contractors walked off the job sites. Subcontractors demanded immediate payment. The banks, sensing blood in the water and seeing the viral outrage surrounding the Mitchell name, froze all secondary accounts.

The press was relentless. Reporters camped outside the Mitchells' gated estate in Belle Meade—the very estate where Vanessa had sprayed me with water just three days prior.

On Wednesday morning, my assistant, Marcus—whom I had hired as promised—walked into my executive suite at Vance Global. He was dressed in a sharp black suit, looking confident and immensely grateful.

"Mrs. Carter," Marcus said respectfully, holding a tablet. "Mr. George Mitchell and Miss Vanessa Mitchell are downstairs in the lobby. They do not have an appointment, but Mr. Mitchell is begging to see you. He says it’s a matter of life and death."

I looked up from my documents, a small, quiet smile touching my lips. "Did they bring a hose?"

Marcus couldn't help but chuckle. "No, ma'am. They look like they haven't slept in three days."

"Show them up, Marcus," I said, leaning back in my high-backed leather chair. "Let's see what the Mitchells have to say when they aren't holding the water."

Five minutes later, the double doors of my office opened.

George Mitchell looked like a broken man. His suit was wrinkled, his hair unkempt, and deep dark circles sat under his eyes. Beside him, Vanessa looked entirely drained of her former beauty. She wore no makeup, a simple black dress, and her eyes were swollen and red from endless crying.

They stood near the entrance of my massive office, looking around at the glass walls, the breathtaking view of the Nashville skyline, and the wall of awards and charity honors bearing my name.

"Mrs. Carter," George stammered, taking off his jacket in a gesture of submission. "Thank you... thank you for seeing us."

"Sit," I said smoothly, pointing to the two leather chairs in front of my desk.

They sat down on the very edges of the seats, looking terrified to make a wrong move.

"Mrs. Carter," George began, his voice shaking. "I am here as a father, and as a businessman. My company is facing bankruptcy. My life’s work is going to be liquidated by Friday if Vance Capital doesn't lift the freeze on our loans. I am begging you for mercy."

I looked at George silently for a long moment. Then, my eyes shifted to Vanessa.

"And you, Miss Mitchell?" I asked softly. "Why are you here?"

Vanessa swallowed hard, tears immediately brimming in her eyes. "I came to apologize, Mrs. Carter. I came to tell you that I am so, so sorry for what I did to you."

"Are you sorry for what you did?" I asked, leaning forward on my elbows. "Or are you sorry that the woman you sprayed turned out to be the person who holds your family’s financial destiny in her hands?"
