Chapter 6 - The Aftermath and Jessica's Awakening

d and locked in a holding cell awaiting arraignment, the hardest part of the ordeal was still waiting for me outside the precinct.
Jessica was sitting on a plastic chair in the lobby, her wedding dress long since discarded, wearing an oversized grey hoodie and clutching a styrofoam cup of water with both hands. Her face was swollen, tear-stained, and completely hollow.
When I pushed open the double doors from the back hallway, she looked up.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The gulf between us felt wider than an ocean—years of sibling rivalry, petty arguments, and sharp remarks culminating in this nightmarish reality.
I walked over slowly and sat down in the chair beside her.
"Is it true?" Jessica whispered, her voice crackin
g. "Did he... did he really do that?"
"Yes, Jess," I said gently, reaching out to place my hand over hers. This time, she didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into my shoulder and let out a broken, shuddering sob that seemed to tear right through her chest.
"I brought him into our lives," she cried, her fingers digging into my sleeve. "I defended him against everyone. Mom, you... I thought you were just jealous because I found someone who loved me."
"You couldn't have known," I said, rubbing her back just like I used to when we were kids. "He's a monster, Jessica. But he’s behind bars now. It’s over."
Mom arrived twenty minutes later, having rushed down from the house as soon as the police called her. When she saw Jessica weeping in my arms, the last of her stubborn denial melted away. She dropped her purse on the floor, knelt beside us both, and pulled us into a fierce, tearful embrace.

"I'm so sorry," Mom whispered, her voice breaking. "I was so blind... I just wanted my little girl to have her fairy tale wedding."
"It wasn't a fairy tale, Mom," Jessica said, lifting her head, her eyes hardening with a newfound, resilient strength. "It was a nightmare. But we woke up."
