Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

Five years later, the past felt like a distant movie plot—a dark chapter in a book that had long since turned the page toward brighter horizons.

I was now a senior partner at my architectural firm, leading major civic projects across the state. Jessica had successfully launched her own boutique interior design agency, and our offices were located just two blocks apart in downtown Pittsburgh, making our weekly Friday lunch dates a sacred tradition.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, we sat together on the outdoor patio of our favorite café, watching the bustling city streets. Jessica was engaged to a wonderful, grounded man named David—a landscape architect who treated her with kindness, respect, and absolute devotion. There were no grand, performative fairy-tale spectacles planned for their upcoming wedding; just a small, intimate ceremony surrounded by the people who truly loved them.

"Have you finalized the seating chart for the wedding?" Jessica asked, taking a bite of her avocado toast.

"I have," I smiled, resting my chin in my hand. "And I promise you, absolutely no cake will be near anyone's face."

Jessica laughed—a bright, ringing sound that carried effortlessly over the chatter of the café.

I touched my left cheek where the faint, silvery scar rested, completely invisible unless the light hit it just right. It was no longer a mark of pain, but a badge of survival, a reminder of the darkness we had walked through and the unshakable bond that brought us safely out the other side.

Life wasn't about avoiding every sharp edge the world threw your way; it was about knowing who would stand by your side when the blade hit, and having the courage to build something beautiful out of the pieces left behind.

And as I looked across the table at my sister, smiling in the warm autumn sunlight, I knew that our story was finally, truly, happily complete.
