Chapter 7 - A Weekend in Newport

Spring returned to New England with a brilliant explosion of blooming dogwoods and crisp, salt-scented breezes sweeping off the Atlantic.
One Saturday morning, Graham surprised Lily and me with an invitation. "Pack a bag," he announced, leaning against our kitchen counter while sipping coffee. "We're taking a road trip to Newport."
Lily stopped coloring her drawing and looked up, her eyes narrowing slightly with suspicion. "Newport? As in... the Rosewood Estate?"
Graham laughed, walking over to ruffle her hair affectionately. "Not the Rosewood Estate, kiddo. Trust me, I never want to set foot on that property again. No, I rented a quiet, cozy beach house overlooking the cliffs. Just for the weekend. No legal briefs, no board meetings, just ocean air and pancakes."
Lily looked at me for approval. I smiled, feeling a warm flutter in my chest. Over the past year, Graham had seamlessly woven himself into the fabric of our lives. He wasn't just my colleague or my boss; he was Lily’s favorite partner for building epic Lego castles, my trusted confidant, and the man who made me feel safe, cherished, and deeply loved.
The drive down to Newport was filled with windows rolled down, pop music playing softly on the radio, and Lily singing along off-key in the backseat.
When we arrived at the beach house, it was everything Graham had promised—a charming, sun-drenched cottage perched right above a private rocky cove, with white-washed walls and the endless roar of crashing waves outside.
That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of violet and gold, Lily wandered down to the porch steps to chase after a stray butterfly.
Graham and I stood together on the wooden deck, wrapped in light sweaters, watching her play.
"She's growing up so fast," Graham murmured, slipping his hand into mine. His fingers intertwined naturally with mine, warm and steady.
"She is," I agreed, leaning my head against his shoulder. "And she’s happier than I’ve ever seen her. We both are, Graham."
Graham turned to face me, his expression shifting from relaxed to deeply serious. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
My breath caught in my throat.
"Claire," Graham said, his voice trembling ever so slightly—a rare sign of vulnerability from the usually unflappable attorney. "A year ago, I stood in a ballroom in Newport and made the biggest mistake of my life by choosing the wrong person for all the wrong reasons. But out of that chaos, the universe handed me something infinitely more precious than I ever deserved."
He dropped gently to one knee on the wooden deck, looking up at me with eyes full of unwavering devotion.
"You brought honesty, strength, and genuine love into my world when I didn't even know what I was missing. You and Lily are my home. Claire Bennett, will you do me the absolute honor of marrying me—for real this time?"
Tears welled in my eyes, spilling over onto my cheeks, but this time, they were tears of pure, unmitigated joy.
"Yes, Graham," I whispered, my voice breaking slightly. "Yes, a thousand times yes."
As he slipped a stunning, vintage diamond ring onto my finger and stood up to pull me into a passionate, breathless embrace, Lily came running back up the steps, her face beaming with excitement.
"Are you guys hugging or crying?" she asked, her eyes wide.
May you like
Graham laughed, lifting her up into his arms with a massive grin. "Both, kiddo. Both. Your mom just said yes."
Lily squealed with delight, throwing her arms around both of our necks. Looking out over the glittering ocean, I knew the bitter winters of my past were gone forever. The story that had started with mockery and heartbreak in a grand ballroom had finally found its true, beautiful beginning.
