Chapter 2 - The Revelation on the Screen

The vast ballroom of the Rosewood Estate fell into a silence so absolute that the gentle hum of the crystal chandeliers sounded like a distant thunderstorm. On the giant projector screen behind the sweetheart table, a high-definition video burst into life, painting the elegant pastel decorations in harsh, revealing hues.

The first frame captured a sleek, dimly lit private dining room at an upscale restaurant in Boston. The date stamp in the corner read just three weeks prior. Seated at the mahogany table were Vanessa Whitmore and a man who was unmistakably not Graham Ellison.

A sharp gasp ripped through the front row. It was Graham's mother, Eleanor Ellison, a formidable woman wrapped in emerald silk whose posture stiffened instantly.

On the screen, audio began to stream through the state-of-the-art surround sound system. Vanessa’s voice, crystal clear and devoid of the sweet cadence she used around Graham, echoed across the three hundred guests.

“Graham is just the safety net, Marcus,” Vanessa’s recorded self laughed, swirling a glass of expensive red wine. “He has the family name, the Newport connections, and a trust fund that can bankroll my boutique for the next ten years. Once the marriage certificate is signed and filed, I’ll have access to his assets. As for physical attraction? Please. You’re the only one who knows how to handle me.”

The man across from her, a handsome junior partner from her own interior design firm named Marcus Vance, smirked on camera. “And what about the prenup?”

“Oh, my lawyer is a fool, and Graham is too trusting to read the fine print. I’ve structured it so that if we divorce after two years—which is the absolute maximum I intend to tolerate him—I walk away with half his liquid holdings and the downtown loft. It’s a masterpiece of planning.”

At the head table, the color completely drained from Graham Ellison’s face. The polished, confident smile he had worn all evening vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated shock. His jaw worked silently as he stared at the screen, watching the woman he had sworn to love and cherish mock his intelligence, his career, and his heart to another man.

Vanessa lunged forward, her pristine wedding gown tangling around her ankles as she shrieked, "Turn it off! Turn it off right now! It's a deepfake! It's artificial intelligence generated by my jealous sister!"

She whirled around, her eyes blazing with blind fury as she pointed a manicured finger directly at me. "Claire did this! Her and her miserable, scheming daughter hacked my life! Security, remove them! Remove them right now!"

None of the security guards moved. They stood frozen, transfixed by the audio that continued to play. On screen, Vanessa and Marcus were now clinking their glasses together in a toast to their impending financial conquest, laughing about how gullible Graham’s parents were.

My mother, Patricia, looked as though she had swallowed a stone. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. She grabbed Vanessa’s arm, whispering something frantic, but Vanessa shook her off violently.

"Graham, baby, please!" Vanessa cried, pivoting back to her groom with tears artificially welling in her eyes, her voice pitching up in panic. "You know me! You know how much I love you! That video is fake, it’s a sick prank orchestrated by Claire because she’s bitter that she’s a divorced nobody living in a studio apartment!"

Graham slowly turned his head to look at her. The warmth in his eyes was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, cutting clarity. He stood up from his chair, his tall frame towering over her.

"Vanessa," Graham said, his voice terrifyingly calm, cutting through the murmurs of the crowd. "My firm handles digital forensics and corporate fraud litigation. That video wasn't synthesized. The metadata matches the timestamp, the ambient acoustics are consistent with the private cellar at Le Bernardin, and I recognize the cuff links I bought Marcus for his promotion last month."

He looked down at the expensive platinum band resting in the velvet box on the table, then back up at Vanessa.

"The wedding is off."
