Chapter 6 - Standing Tall

The precinct was a blur of fluorescent lights, clicking keyboards, and hushed conversations. Detective Vance met me near the front desk and guided me into a private consultation room.
The paperwork took an hour. I signed affidavit after affidavit, detailing how my signature had been stretched, how my candle business—Aura & Ember—was entirely independent, and how I had repeatedly asked my family to respect my financial boundaries.
When I finished, Vance looked across the table with a warm, empathetic smile. “You handled that with remarkable poise, Ms. Hart. Financial manipulation within families is some of the ugliest cases I see. People feel entitled to what isn't theirs because of blood ties.”
“Blood doesn’t entitle anyone to exploit you,” I said quietly, gathering my bag.
As I walked out of the police station into the crisp midday air, my phone—though blocked from my immediate family—buzzed with a notification from my business manager, Sarah.

A genuine, unforced smile spread across my face. While my family was crumbling under the weight of their own greed and deceit, the life I had built with my own two hands—out of the ashes of my deepest grief—was finally blooming into something extraordinary.
