Chapter 7 - The Trial of Wade Vance
The state of Ohio versus Wade Vance began on a crisp Tuesday morning in October.
The courtroom was packed. Wade looked a shadow of his former self; his expensive suit was replaced by an orange jumpsuit, his arrogant swagger entirely gone. His defense tried to argue that the physical punishments were merely "traditional disciplinarian methods," but that defense crumbled the moment the prosecution played the security footage from the hallway blind spots, coupled with expert testimony from pediatric psychologists detailing the extent of Tommy’s trauma.
The turning point of the trial came when Ava took the stand.
She walked up to the witness stand in a neat blue sweater, her back straight, her expression composed. She didn't look like a traumatized child; she looked like a witness for the prosecution who commanded the respect of the entire courtroom.
The prosecutor gently guided her through her testimony.
"Ava, can you tell the court what happened on the afternoon of June 14th?"
"Wade locked Tommy in the pantry for three hours because Tommy spilled a glass of juice," Ava answered clearly, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "When I tried to let him out, Wade grabbed my arm and threatened to hurt us both. I saw him reach for his golf club in the hallway rack. I didn't want him to hurt Tommy, so I defended my brother."
Wade’s attorney stood up to object, stammering about self-incrimination, but the judge overruled him instantly.
"Let the record show the witness acted in justifiable defense of a minor," the judge stated firmly.
When cross-examination came, Wade’s lawyer tried to badger her, asking why she didn't just tell an adult.

Ava looked straight at the lawyer, her eyes cold and piercing. "I told my mother. I told my grandfather. I told my aunt. Everyone told me to be quiet and let the man rule the house. So I stopped talking and started protecting."
A heavy hush fell over the gallery. Even the jury members looked visibly moved by her courage.
